WILLIAM H. HENDERSHOT, 0F AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 RUBY S.
STARCHER, OF SOUTH AKRON, OHIO.
BOLT-CUTTER AND SHEARS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HENDER- SHOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Cutters and Shears, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a combined bolt cutter and shears, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which ma be serviceably employed for the cutting 0 bolts, as well as tin and other sheet material.
It is another object of my invention to provide a device for the above purpose which is very strong and durable in its construction and may be manufactured and sold at comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the opposite side of the device and showing the same engaged upon a bolt; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates an elongated, U-shaped body plate having the longitudinally diverging, spaced arms 6, the inner edges 7 of which are suitably sharpened for cutting engagement with the opposite sides of the bolt.
8 designates the handle bars which are respectively connected by means of the bolts 9, at one of their ends, to the respective arms 6 of the body plate 5. A latch plate 10 is pivoted at one of its ends to the extremity of one of the arms 6 and is provided in its other end with a slot to receive a keeper pin 11 fixed in the extremity of the other arm 6 when the plate is positioned at right angles to the arms 6, thereby closing the outer end' of the space between said arms. The other end of each of the handle members 8 is pro vided with a loop 12 therein to receive the fingers of the hand. Upon one side of the middle portion of the body plate 5 which connects the spaced arms 6, the shear blades Specification of Letters lat'ent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed May 14, 1917. Serial No. 168,439.
13' are mounted at one of their ends upon a common pivot indicated at 14. The inner opposed edges 15 of these blades are likewise suitably sharpened; and adjacent to its free end, each blade is provided on its other longitudinal edge with a lug or projection 16 which is slotted, as at 17. Metal straps 18 are riveted, as shown at 19, to the respective handle bars 8, said straps being bent upon themselves and the terminals connected by the bolts or rivets 20 which are movable in the slots 17 of the respective shear blades.
In the use of the device as a bolt cutter, it will be observed from reference to Fig. 2 that the arms 6 may be engaged upon diametrically opposite sides of the bolt, and the latch plate 10 then moved to its closed position across the spaced ends of said arms. The handle-bars 8 are then securely grasped and the device shifted longitudinally so that the edges 7 of the arms 6 will alternately out into the diametrically opposite sides of the bolt until the bolt is completely severed.
The shifting movement of the arms 6 with respect to thebolt is limited in one direction by means of the latch plate 10 so that the disengagement of the cutting edges 7 of the arms from the bolt during the operation of the device, is obviated. When the device is to be used as a metal shears, it will be understood that the latch plate 10 is moved to its open position and the metal sheet engaged between the cutting edges of the shear blades 13. The handle bars 8 are then moved toward or from each other in the usual manner so that the cutting edges of the blades 13 will out through the material.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use, and several advantages of my improved cutting tool will be clearly and fully understood. While the device is exceedingly simple, I have found the same highly serviceable in practical use. It is also manifest that the tool is of very durable construction and may be produced at relatively small manufacturing cost. The tool may, of course, be made in various sizes and the several parts of the same as above described can be considerably modified in form and proportions. It is, therefore, to be understood that while I have illustrated one practical embodiment of the invention, the same is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied Within the spirit and scope of the'invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
A. bolt cutting tool including a body plate provided with elongated divergently disposed arms, relatively movable shear blades mounted upon one side of said plate, a eom mon pivot for the shear blades at one of their ends fixed in the body plate at the inner ends of said diverging arms, handle members pivotally connected to the respecnae'z ees tive arms beyond and in spaced relation to the free ends of the shear blades, said handle members extending longitudinally in the same plane with the shear blades, and means fixed to each handle member and having a shit'table connection With the respective shear blades adjacent the free ends of the latter.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
