COMBINATION PERCUSSION-HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed May 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,474.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ToKUMrrsU KARA'rsU, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing `at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Percussion-Hammer, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to percussors such as are used in surgery, the object being to provide an instrument which shall satisfy the demands for a percussion hammer.
Other objects of this invention are to provide a surgical hammer in which the impact element is detachable and removable from the head, for cleansing purposes, and to construct a handle for the hammer in the form of a receptacle to contain the other surgical elements when not in use.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a percussion hammer embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an end or side elevation of the same, with the hammer head in section, the hammer being turned at an angle of ninety degrees.
Referring to the drawings: The device consists of a handle l, having the bifurcated head 2, which is grooved to receive the impact element 3, consisting of a rubber ring somewhat irregular to conform with the head, and providing two percussive surfaces, one of which is, pointed relative to the other for a variety of uses.
The impact element 3 may be detached and removed for cleansing purposes, and is attached to the hammer between the two halves of the head 2, which are clamped together by the latch 4f. The handle is hollow and is provided with a screw cap 5, having a knurled rim 6, to facilitate removal. handle and cap are further provided with a graduated scale l5, whereby the linear dimensions of a cut, wound or bruise, may be determined.
From the foregoing it may be seen that I have combined in one implement, a percussion hammer, and a scale, all of which may be conveniently and independently manipulated in the performance of surgical operations, and which occupy no more space than the hammer alone would occupy.
What is claimed is:
l. A hammer comprising a bifurcated head the abutting halves of which are provided with a peripheral groove, a detachable impact element mounted in the groove, a latch to lock the halves together, and a handle therefor.
2. A hammer comprising a bifurcated percussor head formed with two abutting halves, and jointly formed with a peripheral groove, a detachable impact element carried in the groove, a latch to lock the halves together, and a hollow handle for the head.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliX my signature this 17th day of May, in the year 1917.
