Description

No. 834,827. PATENTED OCT. 30, 1906.

APPLIOATION FILED JANA), 190s.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES D. LUSE, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
MALLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application and Jmir a, 1906. Serial Io. 205,271.
1 Patented. Oct. 80, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, James D. LUsE acitizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of ennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mallets, of which the following is a specification.
ThlS invention relates to mallets the ob- 'ect of the invention being to rovide a comined hammer and mallet the strikingheads thereof so arranged that they will not interfere in the slightest .way with each other, thus enabling the implement to be used with equal effectiveness either as a hammer or a mallet. A
A further object of the invention is to so combine the mallet head or heads with the hammer-head that they may be removed and re laced at will, the construction also provi g for an easyrenewal of the part or parts 1 of the mallet-head which receive and sustain a the im act of the blows.
Wit the above and other objects in view sponding parts in all the figures of the draw-.
iifrrin to the drawings, 1 desi ates a familiar form of hammer-head provi ed with Ellie usual opening or eye to receive the hane 2. a In carrying out the present invention the head 1 is provided at opposite points with threaded openings 3, directly in line with.
each other, and after the handle is inserted in the head said opening 3 is preferably extended through the handle 2,.as shown in Fig. 3, so as to'admi't the threaded shanks or stems4 of a pair of o positely-located mallethead holders each owhich1s cupshaped or provided with a disk-shaped base 5 and a marginal flange 6, extending entirel around the same, said cup-shaped holder aring and with him.
being screwed up firmly against the flat side of the head 1, as clear] shown in 3.
The outer surface 0 the flange 6 is preferably knurled or milled to facilitate the appli-' cat1on of the holder to the head 1 and its removal therefrom. The interior surface of the flange 6 is. also threaded, as shown at 7, and a hard-wood or fiber block 8,forming the striki -surface of the mallet-head,'is inicrted in t e holder, the size of said block 8 e bloc and act as a retaining means t erefor. The outer stri -surface of the block is preferably rounde or convex, as shown. It will be understood that two of said malletheads are employed, the same bei' arranged at opposite sides of the hammeread and being firmly held in place theleon b means of the threaded stems or shanks'4,w 'ch are of suflicient length to extend through the metal sides of the hammer-head and into the handle 2, as shown in Fi 3, said shanks or stems thus acting as a ey to prevent the hammer-head from slipping ofl the handle. Two complete implements are thus combined in one, rendering it unnecessary for a mechanic to ca a cumbersome mallet about T e mallet heads or blocks 8 may be easily removed when worn out or injured, and other blocks may be readily substituted therefor.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A hammer head having a threaded opening in the side thereof, in combination with a mallet-head comprising a flanged holder embodying a threaded shank or stem screwed into the openin in the hammerhead, and a block mounte in said holder and projecting beyond the same, substantially as described.
2. A hammer-head provided with a threaded ope in one side thereof, in combination with a ma let-head embodying a on -shaped holder having a threaded shan which screws into the opening in the hammer-head, said holder being internally threaded, and a striking-block fitted into the threaded holder and projectingwbeyond the same, substantially as descrl d.
3. The combination with a hammer prosuch that the threads 7 will engage the vided with a threaded opening through one side thereof, of a mallet-head embodying an In testimony whereof I afiix my signature interiorlysthreaded cup-shaped holder having in presence of two witnesses. a threaded shank which passes through the JAMES D LUSF opening in the hammer-head and enters the 5 handle, and a. striking block having a Witnesses:
threaded engagement wlth the holder and H. RUSSELL HILL, projecting beyond the same. JOHN A. R. SCHRADER.
