To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE G. Bnmnnn,

a citizen of the United States of America,

and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the follow,-' ing is a specification.

L This invention relates to copy holders and particularly to'means for holding copy on a predetermined plane associated with yieldable means of novel character for urging the said copy toward a predetermined plane, the

said invention furthermore including novel means for urging the two sides or parts of an open book toward a predetermined plane,

the saidurging means being yieldable to compensate for books of different thicknesses or for exposing the pages of an open book on the same plane, the invention further contemplating the provision of novel means for urging or pressing the hingedportion of the book to the said predetermined plane so that the inner margins or edges may be exposed.

A further object of this invention is to provide novel means for utilizing the copy holder in connection with books of different sizes in which the copy supporting elements may be moved outwardly and supported in difl'erent positions of adjustment.

The invention consists in the broad idea to be set forth in the claims during the prosecution of the applicati0n,'the said claims to be of such scope as to give protection commensurate with the inventive act in view of the-state of the art when the said invention was produced. In these drawings 1 10 denotes a frame which may be a part of. a photdgraphing apparatus, in which a bellows frame 11, and lens boxl are supported in operative rela-' tion to the copy holder. The frame 10 as here shown has a bracket 13 on which a base 14: of the copy holder is supported. The base of the copy holder may be of any construction to support the operating parts of the book holder. and it is here shown as a.substantially rectangular casing. Rising from the floor of the base, near the longitudinal center and at the side edges, are guides 15 and, 16 arranged in .pairs and spaced apart to form ways 17 that is to say there is a pair of guides at each side edge of dthe base and the guides form ways for a ro 18.

In the present embodiment of the invenv tion, the base 14 further constitutes a support for the slid'ng sills 19-and '20 which a head 21. The head2L' is illustrated as having a block 22 secured to it-by the screws 23 threaded in the block 22 for the purpose of communicating motion to the head and sills.

Abearing 25 is provided as av support for the screw 24 and the outer end of the saidscrew-has a crank handle 26 by which the screw is rotated. A cross pin 27 extends through the screw to prevent longitudinal movement of the said screw, thus causing the 'said screwj'to communicate "motion to the head and when thesaid screw is r0-- tated; Blocks 28 and 29 are mounted on the sills 19 and 20 res ectively and thesaid blocks have beveled aces forming cams which enand a screw 24 is gage the rod 18 and force the same outwardly from the base and permit it to move toward the base according to the direction of movement of the sills, and the rod 18 extends through side bars 30 and 31 of a frame which is movable with relation to the base. The side bars are connected by braces 32 and 33 and the side bars near their ends- support pivots 34 and 35 on which the copy supporting tables or shelves 36 and 37 are respectively oscillatably mounted through the bearing bars 38 and 39 which extend respectively from the tables or supporting leaves 36 and 37. The manner in which the tables or leaves are is well shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing and for the 'purpose of normally pressing the tables or leaves outwardly, springs 40 and 41 are anchored to the base by means of clips 42, the outer ends of the said springs bearing against the inner surfaces of the leaves or tables 36 and 37 to force them outwardly. 1

Approximately centrally of the frame is a board or plate 43 holding a plurality of springs 44 through which the rod 18 extends and the said springs 44 engage a head or follower 45 which is pressed outwardly by the said springs. The outer surface of the follower 45 is convexed and is adapted to engage. the hinges of books to press the book into an open position so that the open leaves as well as the hinged portion are pressed to a predetermined plane.

'The frame is constructed to support a transparent covering 49 such as glass, which is placedagainst the open leaves of the book or copy, so that said copy is retained in' a predetermined plane and held thereagainst by the springs which are effective to force the copy holding members outwardly. The frame 47 may have a securing device or latch 49? at the side thereof opposite'the hinges, although in most instances theweight of the frame and covering is suii'icient to retain these parts in proper position.

The parts are permitted to assume these different positions of adjustment by reason of the flexithem, their coacting relation, etc. 7

The support for the book is adjustable to compensate for books of different thicknesses by reason of the yieldable character of the supports and furthermore by reason of the adjustable sills which carry the blocks as said blocks force the rod 18 outwardly or allow the said rod to move inwardly and thesaid sills are positively actuated in either direction through the manipulation of the screw.

While I have shown the base as am a horizontal position, it may be used in vertical position or at diiferent angles with relation to, the vertical or horizontal sothat it may be properly positioned with relation to the lens or photographingapparatus.

The illustration and foregoing description is utilized for the purpose of. disclosing one embodiment of the invention and it may be regarded as I view it, as the preferred form. t is observed. that in the specification, the term book hlnge is used and that provision is made for exerting pressure'on the" so called booln hinge.

In a copy holder, a base, a member slidable on the base, means for moving the said member on the base, a frame, means on the sliding member for moving the frame outwardly with relation to the base, copy supporting members carried by the frame comprising tables and a pressing head c0- acting to support a copy, and means for yieldmgly holding the said copy supporting members with relation to the frame.

7. In a copy holder, copy holding tables and a pressing head, a flexible facing strip connecting the tables and head, means for urging the tables outwardly, means for urging the head outwardly, and means for enaging the copy supported by the tables and head for limiting the outward movement of the copy.

8. In a copy holder, a copy holding table and a pressing head coacting to support a book in open position, means for pressing the head against a hinge of a book, means for pressing the table outwardly, and means for limiting the movement of the pressed members.
