(Cl. 312-233) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A copier comprising an upwardly facing exposure window, a shelf for supporting one side of an open book I with the other side overlapping the window, and means for adjusting the support to accommodate books of different thicknesses.
This invention relates to copiers of the type having a window facing upwardly to support material to be copied, particularly for copying material from books. Such machines usually have a support at one side of the window to support one side of a book with the other side overlapping the window. While such machines are satisfactory for the books which can be opened with 0pposite pages lying flatwise in substantially the same plane, they are unsatisfactory for thick books, especially if the book has a relatively stiff back interconnecting the leaves and covers, because the margin of a sheet adjacent the back cannot be pressed against the window.
Objects of the present invention are to provide supporting means of the type referred to which overcome the aforesaid difliculty, which accommodate books of different thicknesses, which copy clearly along margins adjacent book backs, which are simple in construction and easy to use.
According to this invention the shelf or other support at the side of the exposure window is adjustable to provide a supporting surface for one side of a book at different levels to accommodate books of different thicknesses. While the support may be adjusted by sliding, swinging or otherwise, the adjusting means preferably comprises a parallel movement which keeps the plane of the shelf parallel to that of the window in each adjusted position.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the sheet is mounted on a cabinet with parallel links which swing about shelf pivots and cabinet pivots, the shelf pivots being higher than the cabinet pivots when the shelf is in its raised position and the pivots being arranged so that the shelf pivots may swing past dead-center to a position below the level of the cabinet pivots, the links are spaced apart in the direction of swinging movement and means are provided to keep the links parallel while passing dead-center, said means comprising a time member pivotally interconnecting the links. Preferably the links have extensions which extend beyond the cabinet pivots and with their ends extending lengthwise of the pivots and the time member is connected to said ends.
For the purpose of illustration the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

The particular embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration comprises a cabinet 1 having a horizontal exposure window 2 with an adjacent shelf 3 which is normally at the same level as the window as shown in FIG. 2. The shelf is connected to the cabinet Patented Sept. 3, 1968 by a parallel movement which permits the shelf to move between the full-line position 3 and the broken line position 3 while maintaining the plane of the shelf parallel to the plane of the exposure window. The parallel movement is constructed as follows.
Two shafts 6 and 7 are journaled on the cabinet at 8 and 9 and two shafts 11 and 12 are journaled in brackets 13 and 14 connected to the lower side of the shelf. Interconnecting the shafts 6 and 11 are two links 16 and 17 and interconnecting the shafts 7 and 12 are two links 18 and 19, the links being fastened to the shafts as by welding. The links have hooked ends interconnected by U-shaped tie members 21 and 22 which keep the shelf horizontal as the parts pass the dead-center position in which all of the shafts 6, 7, 11 and 12 are in the same horizontal plane.
While one desirable embodiment of the invention has herein been disclosed by way of example, it is to be understood that the invention is broadly inclusive of any and all modifications falling within the terms of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In a copier comprising a cabinet having an exposure window facing upwardly for supporting a record to be copied, a support at one side of the window for supporting one side of an open book with the other side overlapping the window, and means for adjusting said support to provide a supporting surface for said one side of the book at different levels to accommodate books of different thicknesses, said means comprising parallel shafts on the cabinet and support respectively, L-shaped arms having their upper legs connected to the shafts respectively and links interconnecting the lower legs of the arms to keep the support parallel to the said window.
2. A copier according to claim 1 wherein said support is a shelf on a cabinet.
3. A copier according to claim 2 wherein said means comprises a parallel movement so that the plane of the shelf is parallel to the plane of the window in each adjusted position.
4. A copier according to claim 3 wherein the parallel movement comprises parallel links pivotally interconnecting the shelf and cabinet to swing about shelf pivots and cabinet pivots, the shelf pivots being higher than the cabinet pivots when the shelf is in its raised position and the pivots being arranged so that the shelf pivots may swing past dead-center to positions below the level of the cabinet pivots.
5. A copier according to claim 4 wherein said links are spaced apart in the direction of swinging movement and means is provided to keep the links parallel while passing dead-center.
6. A copier according to claim 5 wherein said means comprises a tie member pivotally interconnecting said links.
7. A copier according to claim 6 wherein said links have extensions extending beyond the cabinet pivots and said tie member is connected to said extensions.
8. A copier according to claim 7 wherein the ends of said extensions extend lengthwise of said pivots and the tie member is connected to said ends.
