GEORGE P. WIGGINTQN. OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN. ASSIGNOR TO KALAMAZOO LUOSE LEAF BINDER (30.. OF KALAMAZGO, MICHIGAN.
BINDER DEVICE.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Original application filed November 26. 1915. Serial No. 63,566. Divided and this application filed October 1,
' 1917. Serial No. 194.163.
To (IZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I. Gnome I. VIGGIN- 'rox. a citizen of the l nited States. residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo. State of lvlichigau. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder Devices. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in binder devices.
This application is a division of my application tiled November 26. 1915. Ser. No. (33.566.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved binder device which facilitates the us binders or loose ot' temporary sheet holders. mrticularly such as are used for record or accounting purposes.
Second. to provide an improved binder de-' vice which tacilitatesthe manipulation and handling ot'temporar binders or loose sheet holders for the insertion or removah of sheets.
Third. to, provide an improved binder which facilitates the handiing or manipulation of the sheets ot'temporarv binders or loose sheet holders.
Further objects. and objects relating to structural details. will definitely appear from the detailed description to tollpw.
I accomplish the objects of my invention l the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims:
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming; a part of this specification. in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of a holder device embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is aperspective view with a binder arranged therein in position for the manipulation of the sheets.
Fig. III is a plan view partially in section on a line corresponding to the broken line ;3 of Fig. IV. a part. or the sheets being shown in oflset relation.
Fig. IV is a vertical longitudinal section on at li'ne corresponding to line H ot Fig. III. A
Fig. V is a detail vertical section corresponding to that of Fig. IV showing the holder adjusted to position to recelve a binder and with the binder arranged thereon. 5
Fig. VI is a detail longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 66 of Fig. III, showing the relation of the removable post in the binder.
Fig. VII is a detail section through the post, holder on a line COII'GSPOIldlHg to line 7-7 of Fig. IV.
Fig. VIII is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 8-8 of FigfIV. showing details of the guide member.
Fig. IX is a detail longitudinal section through the binder illustrated removed from the holder and closed.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts. throughout the several views. and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing. the binder illustrated comprises a pair of covers 1 provided with chambers to receive the adjusting mechanism. Binding strips 2 extend between the covers. Clamping members 4 are pivotally connected to the covers. These clamping members have sockets 5 for the removable posts 6. The sheets or leaves 7 have holes 8 adapted to receive these posts and notches 9 adapted to receive the binding strips. When the binder is closed with the posts inserted the sheets are effectively retained in the binder. However. when the clamping members are separated and the posts removed the sheetbody is entirely free.
The binder and sheets illustrated are described in detail in my Letters Patent #1.1H.458. issued to me March 7, 1916.
I provide a pair of holders each adapted to receive a binder member comprising. in, the structure illustrated. the cover and clamping bar. and support the same so that 95 the sheets may be arranged thereon.
These holders. which I designate generally by the niunerals l0 and 11 in Fig. I of the drawing, are mounted on a pair of supportmg base members 12. The holder 10 comprises side member 13 and an and member 14, While the holder member 11 comprises a side member 15 and an end member 16.
The end members are mounted in a relatively fixednrelation with their-supper edges meetin g. 1' The end members haveiregistering 4 slots 17 adapted to receive the binding strips 2'when the binders are arranged as shown in Fig. II. The side members are'mounted on pivots 18 so that they may be swung to c'oactin'g relation with the end members, as
' best shown 'in Fig. VI, or to an approxinected to the inner ends of the side members at 20-20, and have teeth 21 adapted to en gage the bolts 22. The bolts are provided with clamping nuts 23 for securing the links in their adjusted position. With the parts thus arranged, the side members of the holders'may be swung to their horizontal position to receive the binder members in arranging the ,binder in the holder or swung into position to coact with the end members and the inner ends of the sheets adjusted against the end members of the holders, as shown in Fig. VI. The end members of the holders are preferably arranged so that the end member 14: is at right angles to the side member 13 when. it is adjusted to its lower position, thereby assisting in alining the sheets to receive the post. The end member 16 is preferably disposed atv an acute angle to its coaoting side member, as shown in Fig. IV, so that when the sheets are adjusted on the holder the outer ends are adjusted .in a stepped or fanned relation to facilitate the fingering of the sheets.
To assist in alinin the slotsand holes in the sheets I provide t e end member 14 with a guide 24, the end member 16 with a guide 25, the notch of the sheets being adapted to beengaged with these guides. The guide 24 is made removable so that it may be. removed to permit the adjustment of. the binder members for closing thebinders. To facilitate this the end member 14: is provided with a slot at 26 and provided with a pair of slide plates 27 for the slide 28 secured to the uide so that it may be inserted and removed y longitudinal movement a The guide is also preferably adapted, as a gage, being nrovided with a scale 29 having indieia thereonindicating the proper length of post to be used, that is, the thickness of the sheet body, as indicated by the scale, iniicates the proper length of post.
Tofurtl er facilitate the selection of posts mounts holder 30 having pockets 31 for,
posts of different lengths. This holder is mounted on the back of the holder side member 15. indicia 32 corresponding to the indicia of the guide 24.
lVith the parts thus arranged the sheets may be readily disposed on one of the binder members, either in alined body or with art of the sheets offset, and they are guided so that the removable posts may be readily inserted and the binding strips swung into the slots. \Vhen one bindermember is adjusted upon the other the guide 2 1 is removed so as not to interfere with the alining of the same thereon.
My improved binder greatly facilitates the use of temporary binders for the keeping of records, particularly where it is desired to keep such records on typewritmg machines or accounting machines.
It is, however, advantageous when it is desired to keep the records by hand.
The sheets are supported so that they'are The pockets are provided with readily accessible and the Wear and tear on the sheets in handling is minimized.
I have illustrated-and described my improvements in a practical embodiment. l. have only shown one type of binder, but it will be understood that other types, for instance, the post type shown in my said patent, may be effectively used. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications in structural details which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which this invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2- 1.
