Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedMay 14,1918.
Applicationefiled March 21, 1916. Serial No. 85,682;
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LARsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lemont, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Flue Covers, of
which the following is a specification.
In the present method of covering the flue opening in a wall, use is made of a metal shield or the like which at times becomes red hot, especially when the soot that lodges about the opening starts to burn. These conditions are very bad as they often ignite the wall paper, with costly and dangerous results of fire to the building.
It is therefore the primary object of this invention to remedy these conditions by providing a flue cover wherein use is made of refractory material secured to that face of the shield presented to the flue.
Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of means which serves in the two-fold capacity of holding the refractory material secured to the shield and retaining the cover as a unit in proper position upon the wall with respect to the line opening.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device forming the subject matter of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view therethrough.
Before entering into a detail description of what is herein shown and described I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention to which I do not limit myself, andthat such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 10 indicates the shield or cover proper which may be constructed from any suitable material and of any desired formation. As shown in this instance the shield comprises a metal disk which has secured to the inner face thereof refractory or non-conducting heatv material 11. The material 11' is positioned within the flue opening and protects the shield 10 from being heated to such a degree as to cause scorching or burning of the wall paper, with a liability of firing the building, which is oftentimes the result when the ordinary metal shield is subjected to a maximum degree of heat intensity.
While the material 11 may be secured to the shield in any suitable manner, the invention provides a construction of means functionating in the two-fold capacity of both securing the material 11 to the shield, as well as serving to hold the cover in its entirety properly positioned upon the wall. In this connection use is made of one or more strips 12 each having a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion with the U portion of one strip being disposed at right angles to the other as shown in Fig. 2. The parallel portions 13 of each strip are offset as at 14;, the offset portions being riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the inner face of the shield 10, while the entire U-shaped portion of the strips including the off-set portions 1% are embedded in the refractory material 11 effectively securing the latter to the shield. The offset portions 14 of the strips are bent at right angles terminating in the resilient fingers 15, the latter embracing the refractory material 11 and projecting a considerable distance therebeyond to engage the wall of the flue opening in which the material 11 is adapted to be fitted, and through the resilient action of the fingers 15 the cover in its entirety is held in position as will be understood. The refractory material 11 is preferably of a lesser diameter than the diameter of the shield, so that when the material is positioned within the opening, the shield will engage the wall surrounding the same.
What is claimed is A cover for flue openings comprising a plug of refractory material, a metallic disk arranged at one side of said plug, and having a greater diameter than that of the latter to project beyond the peripheral edge of the plug, a reinforcing element including a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion embedded in the plug, the parallel limbs of said element being bent at right angles and resting upon the outer side of the plug flush with the surface thereof, said right angularly disposed portions being disposed in contacting engagement with the disk and -is secured, and adapted for holding the cover 1 providing means whereby the disk can be operatively positioned with respect to the riveted or otherwise effectively secured to flue opening.
