To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of IVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Lunch Pails and Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a lunch pail provided with a heater whereby the contents of the pail can be warmed when desired, the construction being such that the heater may be separated from the pail and the latter used by itself with the same advantage as though it were not adapted for use with the heater and that the heater may be united.

with the pail for transportation when desired.

It is my object to provide a device of this character in which the attachment and detachment of the heater and pail may be quickly effected and one which is substantial and durable and is at the same time of such a structure that it can be constructed simply and cheaply.

For these purposes my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts of which it is composed as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which corresponding parts are designated by corresponding marks of reference-Figure 1 is an end elevation of a combined lunch pail-and heater constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a detailed section through the upper edge of one end of the heater.

The pail may be of any approved interior construction and arrangement and is shown as provided with a bail handle 2 by which it, together with the heater 8, when the latter is attached thereto, may be carried. Upon the base of the pail and projecting beyond each side thereof is secured a strip 4 of suitable material such as band iron, the strips having indentations 4? upon their edges adjacent to the ends thereof.

The heater 3 consists of a rectangular iron boX, having an open top, and provided near its bottom with a suitable grate 5, the end of the box having a draft opening and damper 6 therein. A suitable flue opening 7 is placed at the other end of the heater.

5 The heater is narrower than the pail, and

has rolled in the top edges of each of its ends 8 spring wire 9, the ends of which project beyond the sides of the heater and are bent up as at 9 and then inwardly as at 9? to rest upon the strips 4:, being normally held against longitudinal movement therein by the indentations i in which the wire is partially contained. To separate the heater and pail the wires are sprung out of the in dentations and the two parts moved endwise in respect to each other, the ends 9 of the wire running longitudinally on the strips a until the two parts are entirely disengaged.

It will be noted that by the construct-ion shown viz., the use of the spring Wires projecting beyond the sides of the heater, I am enabled to use a pail with substantially a fiat bottom, and at the same time the strips protect the bottom edges of the pail against wear. The spring wires further permit the use of a heater narrower than the pail whereby the solder seams of the latter are removed from proximity to the flames or heated gases.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- cut is 1. The combination of a pail having flat strips upon its bottom projecting beyond the sides thereof, and protecting the edges, the edges of the strip having indentations therein, of a heater, narrower than the pail and having laterally extending projections engaging the said strips and held from longitudinal movement therein by the said indentations, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a pail having flat strips upon its bottom projecting beyond the sides thereof, and protecting the edges, the edges of the strips having indentations therein, of a heater, narrower than the pail, spring wire rolled in the end of the heater, the outer ends of which are extended outwardly and bent upwardly and inwardly and engage the said strips and rest in the indentations therein, substantially as described.
