APPLICATION FILED JULY 5. I916.

JOHN I. DURALIA, OF PUNXSUTAWNEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1918.
Application filed July 5, 1916. Serial No. 107,705.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN I. DURALIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Punxsutawney, in the county of Jefierson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil sharpeners and one of the objects is to provide an inexpensive, durable and efiective device for sharpening pencils and the like, and capable of rigidly holding the pencil against movement during the cutting operation.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the cutter.
Again referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a base which may be of any preferred construction and which may be attached to a support by the screws 2. This base carries a cylindrical casing 3 having a pencil receiving opening 4 at the upper end and a pencil shaving receptacle 5 at the bottom. Within the casing 3 and adjacent to the opening 4: is a guide ring 6 provided with an opening 7 alining with the opening 4. In the casing below the guide ring are a plurality of lugs 8 in which are pivoted clamp fingers 9, each having one end portion formed into a cam 9, that are in turn connected together by a ring 10 through which the pencil will be passed.
12 designates a bearing secured to the inner wall of the casing directly below the fingers and has journaled therein a rotatable wood cutter 14. The bottom of the cutter has secured thereto a ear 15 meshing with a similar gear 16 on'tlle shaft 17 that will be actuated by the handle 18. The gear 15 is provided with a shaft extension 20 journaled in a bracket 21.
In operation the pencil is passed through the openings 4 and 7 until the part to be sharpened is arranged in the cutter 14, after which the fingers 9 are depressed into en gagement with the side of the pencil. During this action the ring 10 slides upon the pencil and regulates the movement of the cams into engagement with the pencil. After the fingers have been arranged in connection with the pencil the handle 18 is manipulated which causes the cutter to rotate and sharpen the pencil.
Having described my invention what I claim is:-
A pencil sharpener comprising a vertical casing having an opening in the top, a guide ring within the casing and having an opening in axial alinement with the opening in the casing, a cutter arranged in axial alinement with the opening, a spider attached to the cutter and located below the same and having openings through which chips may pass, means for operating the spider, a sec ond ring arranged in axial alinement with the opening and cutter and slidably receiving the pencil, and cam fingers pivotally supported by the casing and cutter and adapted to slidably receive the pencil and cam fingers pivotally supported by the casing and connected with the last mentioned rm 1% testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
