Description
W. S. BEEBE. PENCIL SHARPENER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 190a.
Patented Jan. 11, 1910.
PATENT OFFICE.
WINFIELD S. B EEBE, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Application filed June (1,
1908. Serial No. 436,624.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, VVINFIELD S. BEEBE, a citizen of the United States,
residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of' Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pencil- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following,
when taken in Connection with the accompanying drawings and the. letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, inv Figure 1 a view partially'in section of a pencil sharpener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a View thereof in rear elevation.
This invention relates to an improvement in pencil Sharpeners and particularly to the class in which the -pencil is held and the point trimmed by a rotary cutter, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts whereby the pencil is revolved as the point is trimmed; and the invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a post or upright- 2 having a base 3 and a clamping arm 4 in which a clamping screw 5 is mounted whereby the post may be clamped to the edge of a table or other convenient point. At the upper end of the post are bearings 6 and 7 for a horizontal shaft 8 which at one endis provided with a crank 9 by which the shaft may be rotated. Fixed to the outer end of the shaft is a cutter disk 10 having a series of radial openings 11, and adjacent to each opening is secured a blade 12 the edge 13 of which is offset from the rear face of the disk and so as to stand in a plane parallel with said opening. Projecting from the inner face of the disk are a series of studs 14. Secured to or formed integral with the bearin 7 is an arm 15 carrying a chuck 16 through which the pencil 18 to extend, this chuck being arranged at an angle to the plane of the disk. The chuck is provided at its upper edge with bearing rollers 17 which are connected together by a spring ring 18 so as to grip pencils varying in size. At the lower end the chuck is formed with Patented Jan. 11. 1910.
a beveledpinion 19 which is in position to be engaged by the several studs 14 so that "as the disk is revolved the pinion 19 will be turned. At one side of the post- 7 in line with the chuck 16 is a point bearing 20'corresponding to the point of the pencil and the open side is inthe path of the blades 12. A pencil being. inserted into the chuck 6 and forced down lnto the bearing 20 will be in the path of the blades 12 and so that as the disk is revolved, the surface of the pencil projecting from the bearing 20 will be sheared ofl by the blades. As the successive cuts are'made the chuck is revolved by the studs. 14 so as to present another surface to the action of the blades, and after cuts have been made entirely around the pencil it is gradually pressed downward through the chuck until the pencil is completely pointed.
I am aware that rotarycutters have been employed in connection with a chuck for holding a pencil, and therefore do not wish to be understood as claiming broadly such as my invention.
I claim A pencil sharpener comprising a disk, blades carried thereby, studs projecting from the inner face of said disk, and a pencil chuck arranged ina plane at an angle to the plane of said disk, slots in the chuck, ,a spring ring surrounding the chuck, hearing rollers in said slots and supported by said ring, and a bevel gear carried by said chuck in the path of said studs.
Witnesses:
H. C. BEEBE, C. R. BEEBE.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this WINFIELD s. BEEBE. p
