KNIFE AND PENCIL SHARPENERQ srncrrroerronr rmi part of, Letters Patent No. 707, 1 iau teaeugust is, 1902.
' Application filed December 18, 1901. Serial No. 86,391. (No modeld To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, LENSON JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Gook'and State of Illinois, have invented a new'and useful Knife and Pencil Sharpener, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to combined tools for grinding knives, sharpeningpeucils, and other similar purposes; and my object is to provide an inexpensive and. very desirable device adapted to the use of draftsmen, writers, bookkeepers, or others who use knife erasers and whose pencilsion account of continued use require frequent sharpening, the same being fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and rear elevations of a machine in which is embodied my improvements. Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking into the large end of the pencilholder. Fig. 4 shows, respectively, a side and a front elevation of the vtop portion of the supporting-post to plainly illustrate the screwthreaded part of a journal-box in which the grindingwheel shaft is mounted. Fig. 5 shows, respectively, a rear and a side elevation of the pencil-holder, whose boss is internally screw-threaded, to register with the screw-threads on the outside of the journalbox shown in Fig; 4.
Similar numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views.
The post 1 is provided with a broad basewhich is revolubly mounted theinternal crank gear-wheel 2, which hasa crank-pin 3. There is a horizontallyrdisposedjournal-box 4 at the top of post 1 in which boxis mounted shaft 5, and at one end of the latter is secured a small pinion 6, which gears with cog-wheel 2, as shown in Fig. 1. At the opposite end of shaft 5 from; pinion. 6 are flanges between which are secured a grindstone 7 and a rotary cutter 8, the g'rindstone serving to sharpen small tools, while the rotary cutter is adapted to sharpen pencils, which are held in position to insure the proper taper by being inserted into the conical holder 9.
10, which is" interiorly screw threaded, as before stated, and is split at one side, jthe adjacent split portions being .held together by a binding-screw l l=to clamp the holder on the The pencil-holderis provided with a boss screw-threaded portion '12'ofjournal-box 4, r
so that the holderf-by being revolved on the box may be quickly adjusted to the proper position relative to the'rotary cutter, so that the pencil .maybe dressed to either a blunt or sharp point, as maybe necessary. The pencil-holder may be clamped in position to easily turnupon the journal box, so that the pencil'serving as a levermay be used to turn the holder to any positionfrom that shown or may be firmly clamped in position should but one size of point be desired. On account of the pencil-holder being cut away tangentially at one side 13 intothe tapering hole thereof oneside of thepencil when inserted in the holder projects outwardly within reach of the revolving teeth of the rotary cutter, when it is obvious th'at'if the pencil is slowly revolved by the fingers'it will'be cut to the desired conical form. The screw-threads on the j ournal-box always prevent the holder, when not being revolved, from any movement either to or from the rotary cutter, so that with any given relative position'of the holder the same size of point may bealways produced.
I claim asmy invention'" 1. A combined knife and pencil sharpener, consisting of a journal-box, a revoluble shaft,
a rotary cutter and a grindstone mounted on the shaft which latter'ismounted in the journal-box, a hollow pencil-holder, a longitudinal opening into the hollow portion of said holder, a boss attached to said holder and the said boss attached to the journal-box, and s0 disposed that the longitudinal opening in the pencil-holder is close to the rotary cutter, substantially as and for the purpose stated.
2. A combined knife and pencil sharpener consisting of a journal-box having a portion thereof exteriorly screw-threaded, a revoluble shaft, a rotary cutter and a grindstone, the cutter and grindstone mounted on the shaft and the latter mounted in-the journalbox, a hollow pencilholder, a longitudinal opening into one side of said holder and ex posing the hollow portion thereof, a hollow boss interiorly screw-threaded and attached to the holder, said boss mounted on the screwthreaded portion of the journal-box with the longitudinal opening in the holder close to the rotary cutter, and means for revolving the shaft, substantially as stated.
3. In a combined knife and pencil sharpener, a supporting-post having a journal-box mounted thereon, a revoluble shaft mounted in the journal-box, a grindstone and a rotary cutter mounted on one end of the shaft and a pinion cog-wheel mounted on the other end thereof, a pin mounted on the supporting-post, an internal cog-Wheel revolubly mounted on the pin and in engagement with
