ADJUSTABLE COMBINED WOOD AND COAL HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1918.
Application filed February 25, 1915. Serial No. 10,630.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lniown that I, DAVID QUINCY MINAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upland, in San Bernardino Co. and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in or for Any and All Air-Tight Heating-Stoves, the title of which is the Adjustable Combined lVood and Coal Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to improve the construction of the modern wood burning stove, by permitting of the stove being converted, at will, from a wood burning stove to a coal burning stove, and vice versa.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for wood burning stoves that will permit of the above object being carried out, that will be cheap to manufacture, will be eiiicient in operation, durable, and which can be readily applied to the stove without necessitating alteration of the stove.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the stove, with the attachment applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates a wood burning stove of ordinary construction, having the top wall provided with the usual entrance opening B, and the flue opening 0, the bottom of the stove hav ing, in this instance, a circular cut-out portion so as to Provide an opening D, and the lower ends of the side walls of the stove projecting a slight distance below the bottom wall to provide a flange E.
The attachment for the stove consists of an inverted substantially frusto-conical firepot l, which has its opposite ends open and its smaller end positioned directly over the opening D in the bottom wall of the stove, as shown in Fig. 1, the said fire-pot being provided at the smaller end thereof with laterally and outwardly extending cars, which tral cross bar of the grate has formed there on a depending integral lug 7, which projects through the opening D.
Suspended from the lower side of the bottom of the stove, and beneath the opening D, is a rectangular shaped ash-pit 8, the outer end of which projects a slight distance beyond the front of the stove. The
iash-pit 8 includes the side walls 9, bottom wall 10 and rear or inner wall 11, the top of the ash-pit and the forward end being open and the upper edges of the side and end walls being extended laterally to provide an attaching flange 12 adapted for connection to the stove bottom, by means of bolts 18 which extend through the stove bottom and the flange, so as to hold the ash-pit in place.
Slidably mounted within the ash-pit is a substantially rectanglar shaped ash receiving receptacle 1 1, which is of a length and width substantially equal to the length and width of the ash pit, and includes a bottom wall 15, side walls 16, and front wall 17, the top of the receptacle being open and underlying the grate 6, and the inner end of the receptacle being open, so as to permit of the said inner end of the receptacle passing the lug 7 when the receptacle is being inserted into the ash-pit or removed therefrom. When the receptacle is positioned within the ash pit, the outer or end wall 17 serves as a closure for the front or outer end of the ashpit, and the said outer wall of the receptacle has its upper edge provided with a rearwardly extending flange 18, which partially overlies the interior of the receptacle, and has its forward edge curved, as at 19. A handle 27 is rigidly connected on the said wall 17 of the receptacle and serves as means by which the receptacle can be withdrawn from. the ash-pit.
A grate shaker 28 extends through a slot 29 in the flange E of the stove, and into the receptacle 1 1, and has its inner end bifurcated, for the reception of the lug 7 of the grate, said bifurcated end of the shaker resting upon a pin 30 which extends through the lower end of the lug T. The opposite end of the shaker extends up Wardly, as at 31, and above the receptacle, to provide a nianipulating' handle, When it is desired to shake the grate 6 the manipulating handle 32 is grasped by the hand of the operator and the shaker moved back and forth resulting in an oscillatory inoreinent the grate.
The flange 18 is provided with a slot 20 which receives the handle When the receptacle is fully inserted in the ash pit.
The ash-pit S and the receptacle 1% are adapted to remain on the store, when the store is being used either as a coal store or a wood burning stove. hen it is desired to conrert the store from a coal store, as shown in the drawings, into a Wood burning stove, the fire-pot is reinored and the grate removed from the fire-pot and placed Within the opening D in the store bottom, and the stove is then used as an ordinary wood burning stove.
Having thus describedinyinventioinwhat I claim as new is:
A Combination Wood and coal store including a bottom having an opening, a downwardly tapered fire-pot mounted upon the bottom of the etove and surrounding the said opening and having an interior gratesupporting flange at its lower end and also prorided thereat n'ithineans for detachably securing the fire-pot t0 the store, a grate of a size to fit the flange of the fire-pot and the opening in the bottolnof the store to enable it to be used in the fire-pot or in the opening of the bottom of the store when the fire-pot is lGll'lOYQCl, said grate being also provided with a depending lug, an ash pit secured to the bottom of the store and projeeting in advance of the same. and a handle connected with the lug and ext-ending over the top of the projecting portion of the ash pit.
DAVID QUINCY MINAB. t s] Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each by addressing the Commissioner of Batents, Washington, C.
