INVENTOR i is more fully ALFRED LAFRANCHI OF SNO HOMISH. WASHINGTON.
CARGO-SLING.
Application filed March 28. 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED IJAFHANlllI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Snohomish, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (argo- Slings, of which the following is a full. true, and exact specification.
My invention relates to cargo slings, and more particularly to slings for use in han dling logs and timbers, and has for its principal object to provide an improved and novel type of automatic load releasing sling. which releases the load when the-strain on the handling cable is reversed. Another object of my device is to provide means for holding the load within the sling against 1 slipping from the sling.
Other objects will appear as my invention explained in the f llowing specifications, illustrated in the acco ing drawings and pointed out in theappe'nded claims. 4
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device shown gripping a log. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary planview of same taken on line 02 w of Fi 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, nurperal 1 indicates the forward portion of a hauling line, at the end of which is secured an open hook 2. A link 3 connects the shank of book 2 to 2. splice plate 4, to which issecured the end of a haul-hack line 5. A sling hook 6 is secured to plate 4.- and extends downwardly therefrom to connect with the sling proper, which includes a rigid bar 7 having an eye at either Specification of Letters Patent.

by preventing il from slipping out of the sling. .\s long as the cable 1 is being drawn forward the loop 9 will slay in engagement with tlll' hook but. whenever the line 1 is released and lhhaul-hack line is utilized to reverse the direction of motion of line 1. book 2 is anlonialirally released from on gagi-incnt will] the loop ll. thereby allowing the log to lJt'.('Ulll\" released from the sling.
In logging operations and the like it is frlquvntlv desirable to release logs at a predetermined point and unless my form of automatic relea e is onn'iloycd it is necessary to have a man stationed at this poinl to unfasten the log slings. ,llly device is designed to obviate the. necessity of employing this cxlra man.
\Vhile I have shown a particular form of embodiment: of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will read ily suggest to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and descrilied.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent. is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rigid bar, the upper end of which is secured toa haulage line and the lower end of which is secured to one end of a sling cable, an open hook secured to the haulage line, a loop on the other end of the sling cable, said loop engaging the said hook, a sliding hook mounted upon the said bar andengaging the said sling cable, where 40 rope or cable 8 is secured to the lower end 5 T and is adapted to engage line 8 in a simi- 0 end of hook 2.
by the object may be tightly held in the loop of the sling cable.
2. In a cargo sling, the combination of a of bar 7. The other end of the cable 8 is rigid bar having an eye at either end and seprovided with a loop 9, which may be cured at its upper end to a splice plate, an slipped over the end of hook 2. A sliding open hook to the eye of which is secured one cinch hook 10 is slidably mounted upon bar end of a haulage line, a link connecting said splice plate and hook, a line, one end of which is secured to the lower end of the rigid'bar, and the other end of which is provided with a loop which is adapted to tenga e the open hook, a sliding snatch hook, slidably mounted upon the said bar and adapted to engage the said sling line, downwardly extending teeth upon the under face of the said snatch hook, which are adapted to engage the object within the loop of the sling, whereby the said object is prevented from engagement with the sling.
end. The eye at the upper end of the bar 7 is secured to hook 6, while one end of the lar ma]. ier to a snatch hook. In operation the cable 8 is passed around a log 11, as shown in Fig. 1, and said cable passed through hook 10, and the end 9 hooked over The sliding hook 10 is then shoved down *along the bar 7 as snugly against the top of the log as possible, so that line 8 will have a tight bight against the log. The under face of sliding hook 10 is 55 provided with teeth or prongs 12, which are adapted to engage the top of the log, there- 3. In a device "of the class described the combination of a rigid eye her, a splice plate linked to one end of said bar, an oPe'n hook linked to said splioe fplete, a, hauling 6 line secured to the e e o the said hook which points away 0m the said splice plate, a flexible cable secured at one end to the free end of the said, eye bar and terminating in an open loo at the other end 10 which. normally detecheb y engages the said plate, whereby when the haulage linens slacked and the device is drawn by the haul back line the open end of the flexible cable is disengaged from the first mentioned hodk.
