This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in logging devices and has for its object to provide a device for hauling logs and automatically dumping thesame.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device which will eliminate the usual hand operated releasing mechanism. Heretofore in' clearing up stump land it has been the practice for the men working thereon to erect what they termas a jim` pole, which extends into the air for 'some fifty or sixty feet, the upper end of the jimpole having a sheave mounted therein and a line passing over the sheave and one end 1s secured to the drum of a hoisting engine,
while the opposite end is provided with a means lfor attaching a log. The logs and stumps to `be ldestroyed are attached to theline at the end opposite Vthe hoisting engine -andit will be seen that when the engine -is started the ropewill windon the drum and cause the log to be dragged toward the jim-pole and the logs and s tumps 1n that way will be brought to a pile .which may then be burned or otherwise destroyed.
My invention has for its object the p rovision of an improved device forI releasing the log from its position when it has reached the proper point with relation to the log pile and with these and other obiects in View I now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

A suitable pole 5 is located in the centery of the field and carries at its upper end a sheave 6 whichis rotatablyimounted on a pivot 7, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. Ar-

Themain line indicated by the numeral 9 is adapted to' be wound upon the drum 4 mounted on the platform of the engine and is carried upward .and over the sheave at thel upper extremity of the jim-pole and terminatesiat its opposite extremity in a loop 10, through which is passed a clevis 11. Pivotally. secured between the 'arms of the clevis I provide the body portion 12 which terminates at its opposite extremity in a ring 13. A link 14 passes through the ring and connects the hook 15 therewith as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. This hook 15 is'provided intermediateits ends with an aperture 16, the use of whichwill be more fully hereinafter described. The haulvback-line 17 is wound upon the drums 3 and its opposite terminal extended,
as clearly illustrated, and passes through the -sheaves 8 and 7, as clearly seen in Fig. 2.

.A locking hook 23, which Will be more fully hereinafter described, is adapted to be securedto one of the arms 1of the clevis as clearly lllustrated and carries at its opposite extremity an eye 24, through Which the end of thetrip line 25 is adapted to pass. The end of the trip line opposite'the eye 24 is preferably looped, as clearly illustrated at 26, and cooperates with a ring 27 Wherev by the said end is secured -to a hook 28, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. l
A choker line 29 is provided Which is adapted tov be passed around the endI of the log and one end secured to a vclevis 30, which in turn extends through an aperturev in the at hook 31, this flat hook being preferably cast, in Vthe Aform illustrated,` and providedv at the sideopposite the clevis 30 with an ear 32, having an aperture therein through whichthe link 33 is adapted to pass,vthis link 33 being substantially oval in contour and adapted to receive the end of the hook 28, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. .The end of the choker line opposite the clevis 30 terminates in a loop 34, which is adapted to be hooked over the hook 15, and it will be obvious that when pull is exerted on the main line the choker line Will be caused to clamp the'V end ofthe logand thereby hold the same.
The locking hook, previously mentioned, preferably comprises a hooked member 35, terminating at one extremity in a loop 36, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. An aperture 37 is provided intermediate the hooked member 35 and the loop 36 and-has a transverse groove 38 'communicating therewith. A locking pin 39 is slidably mounted in the aperture 37 and has formed integral therewith a depending portion l0 .which is of the same shape as the slot 38 and when it is desired to slide the pin the member 40 is brought into alinement with the groove 38 and it Will be obvious that the pin may be moved from its position ing-the hook. p
In operation the line 9 is unrolled from the drum 4 and the end carried to the desired position.
The choker line is thon passedaround the log, as shown in Fig. 2, and the loop 3l hooked on the hook 15. Thus it Will be seen that When pull is exerted on the main line the choker line ivill be tightened lon the log and continued pull will cause the log to be dragged to the desired point. lVhen itis desired to release said log the drum 3 is caused to rotate, which will Wind the haul back line and it Will be seen that the hook 15 will be pulled rearwardlyv which will cause the loop to slip off of the same and continued pull ivill cause the trip line to pull the flat hook 31 minste from beneath the choker line and thereby release the log, Without in any Way necessitating the use of manual labor in connection with the releasing thereof.
Vihil'e in the foregoing l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention,- I Wish it to be understood that l may change the speciic arrangements of parts Without in any Way departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed isz- 1.- Al logging device including a choker line having a loon at one endv and provided at the other end with a hook detachably engaging the choker line at a point interniediate of the ends thereof to forma. sling for embracing a log, a main line having a lrelatively large hook provided with a bill disposed longitudinally ofthe main line and extending through the loop of the choker line, a haul back .line passing be tween the sling portion of fthe chdker linel and the log so as to be clamped against theV latter and provided with means for -connecting it With the relatively large hook at the juncture lof the bill and the shank thercof whereby themain hook lwill be mainh tained in a relatively rigid .position when there is a strain on either the main line or the haul back line to maintain the loop posi-- tively on the said projecting bill while a log is being hauled and to enable the-haul back line to positively withdraw the bill from the loop, said haulback line being also adapted to loosen the .sling portion -of the choker line around the log and a trip line connected `With the haul back line and with the hook of the choker line.
