To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MONT GOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rupert, in the county of Minidoka and State 01 Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trip Devices for Hay-Carriers, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had to he accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to tripping devices, and particularly to a tripping device peculiarly adapted to be used in connection with hay ropes and stacking apparatus of .like character, though capable of use under other circumstances.
The general object of my invention is the provision of a very simple tripping device which may be readily connected to cables or pulleys mounted thereon and which will positively hold the supported burden without any chance of accidental release but which will release very readily when it is tripped, and when released will be sure to permit the ring or eye through which the slip oil the tripping evlce.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tripping device in connection W113l1 lOPS and a stacker, the stacker emeobd ylng a mast and arm, a lifting cable havher pulley and to said ropes.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

I Will first describe the stacking apparatus per se and then the detailed construction of the tripping apparatus. .Referringv to the "gures, 10 designates the mast of a derrick or like structure having an arm 11. This arm 11 may be pivotally connected to the mast to rotate thereupon, or the mast may be made rotatable, as desired. the arm 11 with the mast 10 there is a pulley cable 14 1s attached at its extremity to then passes through a pulley or sheave 15, then throu h another pulley or sheave 16, then up to the pulley 12, over pulley 13, and down around the pulley 17, from which the cable may be taken to any source of power.
The pulley 15 is provided wardly projecting hook at its lower end, designated 18. The pulley 16 is also pro vided with a hook 19, and engaged therewith is the improved trip which I will now describe. The body of the trip is formed of a strip of metal, designated. 20, the strip being bent upon itself at 2.1 and extended parallel to the body of the strip and then inwardly cut as at 22 and riveted to the body of the thus providing a relatively long and narrow guide slot 23. his strip acts as a keeper for a bill 27, as will be later stated. Pivoted to the body of the strip, within this slot, is the extremity of a roe 24, the pivot eing designated 25. This rod extends upward and then downward in the form of a loop 26, and passes through the middle of the slot 23 and extends straight downward.
0 its extremity is pivoted a slightly hookshaped member 27 having a bill 28 normally adapted to be engaged with the closed outer end of the slot 23, as shown in Fig. 2. The loop 2 1 has projecting from it the stop pin 29, and at the junction of the curved portion of the loop with the straight portion there is a stop pin 30. These stop pins coact with the side wall of the slot A spring 31 is connected to the shank of the trip and also connected to the loop 26, above its pivot trip cable 32 is attached to the extremity of the trip shank 20.
In the prz-ictical use of this device the loop 26 is adapted to he engaged with the hook 19 of a pulley 16 and the member 27 is adapted to be engaged with the rings 34 of the hay ropes or bands 33. It will be obvious now, assuming that there is a weight engaged with the hook 27 and that the loop 26 is engaged with the hook 19, that a pull upon. the trip cable 32 will cause the trip shank to rotate upon the pivot and rise oil" from its engagement with the bill 28 whereupon the weight of the load will cause the bill to fall and discharge the load. It will further be seen that the trip is e tremely simple, may be cheaply made, rea dily applied, and that there is no chance of accidental detachment. vice in connection with obvious.
In practical use, the hay ropes are disposed on the hay-rack so that the hay will be laid thereon. \Vhen the wagon is brought to the stack the pulley is engaged with the hay rope ring at one end thereof and the trip hook 27 is engaged with the rings 3a on the other end of the hay ropes or bands. The cable let is then pulled either by horse power or by mechanical. power, and the hay is drawn up to the arm 11 or to any sufficient height and'then the arm 11 is rotated so as to carry the bundle of hay over the stack. The stacker then pulls the trip rope 32, releasing one end of the hay ropes and then as the mast is swungback to its original position the hay ropes will be drawn out from beneath the hay.
\Vhile I have described my device as being particularly adapted as a hay stacker, it is to be understood that it is adapted to be used for many other purposes and that the improved trip device may be used wherever it is desired to raise objects from the ground, shift them, and then deposit them in the desired place.
Having described my invention, claim is:
1. A trip device of the character dea scribed including a supporting member having a looped portion, a straight depending shank, a bill pivoted to the lower end of the shank, the bill normally extending upward, a keeper comprising a strip of metal bent upon itself to form an elongated loop, the extremity of the looped portion of the supporting member being disposed within one end of the loop and pivoted to the keeper, the loop embracing the supporting member at the junction of the looped and straight portions thereof, and the extremity of the keeper being adapted to engage over the bill, stops projecting laterally from the supporting member and adapted to engage the keeper and limit its movement, and a spring attached to the supporting member and normally holding the looped end of the keeper in a depressed position where it is adapted to engage the bill.
