JOHN WILLIAM BECK, 0F KINGSBURG, CALIFORNIA,
STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1918.
Application filed February 6, 1918. Serial No. 215,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM Black, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingsburg, in the county. of Fresno and State of California, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a folding or knock-down stool and has for its object to provide a stool of this character which may be taken to pieces, so that the parts thereof can be carried in small compass and, if desired, placed in the pockets of the user. To this end the improved stool comprises a foot piece provided with a socket, a standard, preferably made in two parts detachably secured together, a top piece or seat preferably made in two hinged parts, and a socket piece slidingly mounted in guides attached to the said top piece or seat and serving to hold the two hinged parts thereof rigid when desired, said standard having screw-threaded parts adapted to enter into said socket piece and into the socket of the said foot piece.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a preferred form of the improved stool. Fig. 2 is an underside view of the seat or top piece thereof. Fig. 3 is a section through the seat or top piece and the parts attached or adjacent thereto.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the foot piece of the stool, said foot piece being provided with a threaded socket 13 into which may be screwed the threaded lower end of a standard 14. Said standard 1 1 is preferably made in two parts having adjacent screw threaded ends joined together by a coupling 15. The top piece or seat of the stool consists preferably of two parts or halves 16 attached together by hinges 17. Bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the under side of said top piece or seat are angle bars 18 providing a guideway in which fits a rectangular part of a threaded socket piece 19 into which the upper threaded end of the standard 14 may be screwed.
The seat or top piece will preferably be provided with a rounded down-turned rim 20.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the standard 14 may, when desired, be detached from the socket 13 of the foot piece 12 and from the socket piece 19 of the seat Gopiea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the or top piece of the stool; and if the said standard be made in two parts detachably secured together, which is the preferred construction, these parts may be disengaged from each other by screwing one of the said parts out of the coupling 15. When the hinged parts 16 of the seat or top piece are folded out for use they will be rigidly locked in place by sliding the socket piece 19 to a central position as shown in Fig. 2, so that the angular portion of said socket piece will straddle the joint between the two hinged halves of the said seat or top piece. When it is desired to fold the said hinged halves of the said seat or top piece together the said socket piece may be slidden to one side, in the guideway afforded by the angle bars 18, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
It will thus be seen that the invention provides a convenient folding or knock-clown stool of simple construction, the parts of which may be readily assembled or taken apart, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A folding or knock down stool comprising a foot piece provided with a threaded socket, a seat or top piece also provided with a threaded socket, and a standard adapted to be screwed into the said sockets of the said foot and seat or top piece and consisting of two parts approximately equal in length and detachably secured together, said seat or top piece consisting of two parts hinged together, and means for positively and rigidly locking said parts of the said seat or top piece in place when in position for use.
2. A folding or knock down stool comprising a foot piece provided with a threaded socket, a seat or top piece also provided with a threaded socket, and a standard adapted to be screwed into the said sockets of the said foot and seat or top piece, said seat or top piece consisting of two parts hinged together, and means for holding said parts of the said seat or top piece rigid when in posi tion for use, said means consisting of angle bars attached to said seat or top piece and providing a guideway, and a sliding part fitting in said guideway and which is provided with said threaded socket of the said seat or top piece.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
