HARNESS.
To all whom, it may concern:
7 Be it known that l, SAMUEL H. Baroness, a citizen of the United States, residm at Prosper, in the county of Collin and tate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to an improvement in the reinforcing of such portions of harness as are sub3ected to strain or undue abrasion such for instance as haine tugs,
breech bands or the like and in such connectlon it relates more particularly to a composite structure wherein a metal chain isin-' closed, the chain taking up or receiving thg use to protect the horse from contact with the chain and to prevent the chain from becoming knotted or tangled.
Inasmuch as leatherhas become relatively scarce and at its best readily splits when rotted, it has become necessary to provide in harness some substitute partaking of the nature of leather and yet stronger and not so expensive and yet more durable. in the carrying out of my invention, the chain is inclosed between a relatively wide backing strap of stifi composite 'material such for instance rubber coveredfabric and a relatively narrow facing strap of leather or pliable material, the two straps being stitched together along the upper and lower edges of the facing strap. The chain'is not secured to either strap but is permitted slight play in the composite structure.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part'hereof, in which--- Figure 1, is a front elevational view partly broken away of a hame tug embodying the main features of my invention.
Fi 2, is a perspective view of a portion of said hame tug and Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a breech band embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a chain constituting in Figs. 1 and 2 the tug.
topics or this patent may he obtained for Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April "7, 1916. Serial No. 89,538.
Patented May 7, imll.
breech is lnclosed between a backingstrap 12 of composite, non-pliable material constituting thebreech band and a facing strap 13 of pliable material. In either form of my invention the chain is free to move longitunally in the composite structure 2 and 3 but not to twist or buckle therein. In the breech band, the chain 11 is directly connected by straps 14 to the other parts of the harness.
vHaving thus described the nature and objects of my invention what I claimas new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is;-
2. In a' harness, a breech ing a chain, reotly to the chain and connecting said chain band, compriswith the harness, a relatively w1de backing strap of stifi composite material, a relatively narrow facing strap of leather and a chain inclosed between the straps and free said straps being stitched together along the upper and lower edge of to move thereln,
the narrow strap.
In testimony whereof I have signed. my name to this specification in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL H. BQRECHEEN.
