To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD T. Yno and WILLIAM A. VVIESMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Guards for Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety guards for machines.
The objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a guard for punch presses and other machines having an actuated member, such as a reciprocating die head, 7 Second, to provide a guard for structures of the class described, which is retracted when the actuated member is retracted but which, upon the work stroke of the actuated member, sweeps across the space in front of the actuated member in such a manner as to push or carry the hand or arm of the operator out of danger.
Third, to provide a guard for machines of this character which may be made as an attachment and readily applied to various types of machines now in more or less gen eral use.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a front elevation of a punch press equipped with our improved guard, the press being shown mainly in conventional form.
lFig. TI is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2--2 of Fig. T, the pitman head with the guard actuating pin attached thereto beingshown in several positions occupied thereby during a stroke of the itman.

several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the punch press generally, which is shown mainly in conventional form.
In the structure illustrated the pitman 2 is connected to the actuated member 3 and the driving crank 4. The details of these parts form no part of our invention and fur ther description, therefore, appears to be unnecessary, only sufficient being illustrated to show an adaptation of our improvements.
The guard 5 is mounted on the rocker bar or arm 6 pivotally mounted at 7 upon the bracket 8 secured to one of the bearing pedestals 9 for the crank shaft, the brackets being provided with holes 10 adapted to receive the attachment bolts 11.
The pivot 7 is arranged through the rocker bar 6 adjacent one end and is disposed so that the rocker bar projects in front of the head 12 of the pitman 2. The rocker bar 6 is longitudinally slotted at 13 to receive the pin 1% projecting from the pitman head.
The rocker bar is supported a sufficient distance from the pitman head so that it is cleared by the latter during its travel.
The guard has a forwardly curved portion 15 at its lower end provided with a leather tip 16. A channeled brace 17 extends from the outer end of the rocker bar to the lower end of the guard, effectively bracing and supporting the guard so that it may be made of comparatively light material and still be effective for the purpose.
With the parts thus mounted and connected the guard is actuated with each stroke -of the machine being swung forward on the work stroke and retracted on the return stroke. When in its retracted position it does not interfere with the placing of the work by the operator, but on the work stroke it sweeps in front of the actuated member positively carrying the arm or hand of the operator from the danger zone. There are no parts that are likely to become disarranged or get out of repair, the device being, on that account, very reliable and trust-- worthy.
The operation of the device will be understood but it is desired to point out that the guard arm is moved at varying speeds owing to the different relation the actuating pin assumes during the full stroke of the crank,
for instance, as shown in Fig. I, when the crank is in its upper position the actuating pin is in a substantially horizontal position, the guard arm being in its fully retracted position. On the forward stroke of the crank the pin is carried downwardly and is also inclined, as is shown in the position designated a. This combination of downward and tilting movements of the pin serves to actuate the guard with greater speed than would be the case were it not for this compound movement. In position 6, indicated by dotted lines, the guard has fully completed its stroke. From the position b the pin tilts upwardly thereby providing a quick return of the guard.
As stated, with the parts thus arranged, the placing of the work is not interfered with in any way and, at the same time, it is quite impossible for the workman to be caught or injured by the machine as his hand and arm are forcefully swung out of the danger zone By modifications of the bracket the guard may be readily applied to different types of punch presses and like machines now ,on the market.
We have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications which we contemplate as being desirable under certain conditions and adaptations as we believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which this invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
We desire, however, to be understood as claiming our improvements broadly and the various adaptations thereof within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. The combination with a machine including a frame, an actuated member, a crank shaft, and a connecting pitman therefor of a bracket mounted on said frame, a rocker bar pivoted to said bracket at one end so that its opposite end is supported in front of the crank, such end being longitudinally slotted, a guard secured to the pivoted end of said rocker arm having its lower end curved forwardly and provided with a leather tip, a brace secured to the slotted end of said rocker bar and to said guard arm, and a pin on the pitman head disposed through said slot in said rocker bar, all coacting for the purpose specified 2. The combination with a machine including a frame, an actuated member, a crank shaft, and a connecting pitman therefor, of a bracket mounted on said frame, a slotted rocker bar pivotally mounted on said bracket so that it is supported in front of the crank, a guard mounted on said rocker bar to sweep in front of said actuated member, and a rocker bar actuating pin on said pitman head disposed throu h said slot in said rocker bar, all coacting for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a machine including a frame, an actuated member, and an actuating crank shaft and pitman therefor, of a bracket mounted on said frame, a guard provided with an actuating arm and pivotally mounted on said bracket to sweep in front of said actuated member, and a pin on the pitman engaging said arm, all coacting for the purpose specified.
4. The combination with a machine including an actuated member, and an actuating crank and pitman therefor, of a pivotally mounted rocker bar, a forwardly curved guard mounted on said rocker bar to sweep in front of said actuated member, and a rocker bar actuating pin on the pitman disposed to engage said rocker bar, all 'coacting for the purpose specified.
5.The combination with a machine including an actuated member, an actuating .crank and pitman therefor, of a guard pivotally mounted to sweep in front of said actuated member and provided with an actuating member having a hole therein, and a pin on said pitman disposed in said hole, all coacting for the purpose specified.
6. The combination with a machine including an actuated member and actuating crank and pitman therefor, of a guard pivotally mounted to sweep in front of said actuated member, and a pin on said pitman having engagement with said guard whereby the guard is actuated for the purpose specified.
7. An attachment for punch presses and the like machines comprising a bracket adapted to be mounted on the frame of the machine. a rocker bar pivotally mounted on said bracket, a guard carried by said rocker arm, and a pin secured to the head of the punch press pitman and slidably engaging said rocker arm.
