ADJUSFABLE GUARD EOE BRINTEBS GdI-QLEYS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented J illy 29, 191i).
To aN whom t may cof/werft;
Be 't known that we, Jnnoiun Larson and inonde N. Mannini, citizens of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and usef l Improvements in Adjustable Guards fpr rintcrs ,(alleys, of which the following is a specification.
Qur invention relates to an ad'ustable guard, for use in wmieetion with a prnbrS galley.
An important objlect of the invention is to provide means w 'ieyreby the printer may quickly am] conveniently determine the size of the matter to be printed Without the necessity of taking extensive measurements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guard of the above mentioned character, having means adapted for use upon galleys of different sizes and shapes, with but slight alterations in the eonstruction of the alle n Ayfurther object of the invention is to guard .of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construtipn and inexpensive to manufacture, strong an durable.
Other objects and advantages of our invention will be apparent during the course of the following description:
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisl specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a plan view of apparatus embodying our invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. l
In the drawings wherein for the purpose oi illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 5 i designates a printers galley, of any Well known o-r preferred construction. This galley embodies a rim 6 formed of angle iron, affording an upper flange 7.
To adapt the old galley for use in connection with our adjustable guard, we preferably provde one rim 6 with a scale 8, for indicating the number of ems of type to be dum ed from the stick upon the alley. VVhiib We show the scale 8 applied to t e rim 6, the invention is in no sense restricted to this arrangement, as the scale may be applied to the upper surface oi the ioor or bottom of the o"alley o-r on an `zuljusta'ble metal strip, if esired. The same rim G is provided with a series horizontal transverse o-penin s El, equidistantly spaced and arranged wit 1 a fined relation to the scale 8. Vire satisfactory results are obtained by arran ing the center of the oieninos in alineinent with every otheruppmt o the` spele, these alternate vpoint vines being made longer, lto in( icate the same.
Our improved guard is indicated by the numeral 10, and is provided with a piece or toot 1 1, arranged at a right angle thereto. and dispnsed to shdably Contact with the inner Side of the rim G. A diagoiial brace l2 serves vto connect the ouard 10 and foo-t 1l. The foot 11 is provided near its free end with a lock-pin 13, rigidly secured thereto, and adapted to enter a selected openin 9.
.Arranged upon the top Qjhe gum, 1.0 is. a revirroatvrv belt lt .he bolt Passes transversely across. the inner and pf the foot 11, and is provided with a longitudinal .Slet 15 receiving a Screw 15, Secured to the inet, ear its inner end, the boltJ is provided with a lateral extension 17, having a slot receiving a screw 18 carried by the guard 10. At its outer end, the bolt 14 is provided with a hooked head or end 19, engaging beneath the iange 7.
Arranged beneath the bolt 14, and pivored thereto by a pin 20, is a cam 21, adapted to contact with the inner side ot' the foot 1l. This cani is moved `b-y a lever 22, adapted to operate beneath the bolt 14, and having its free end bent upwardly, as shown at 23.
The length of the slot 15 is suicient to permit of the guard 10 partaking of restrioted reeiprocatory movements, or swinging movements, sutliciently to withdraw the pin 13 from the opening 9, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. However, this movement is not sullicient to allow the separation of the guard and rim S, except by moving the guard longitudinally to and beyond the ree end of the rim. As indicated in Fig. 1, when the lever 22 is swung to the inner position, substantially parallel with the guard 10, the cam 21 will occupy the inactive position, whereby the guard partakes of slight reciprocatory movements with respect to the bolt 14. The guard may now be angularly arranged, as indicated in dotted lines, whereby it may be adjusted to the desired point upon the scale, and again swung to the active position, with the pin 13 entering the selected opening 9. VVllen this is done, the lever 22 is swung outwardly, contacting with the foot l1, and preventing perceptible longitudinal movement of the guard with respect to the bolt.
In the use of the device, the printer may bring the guard to the desired position, and lock it in this position. rlhe printer will then continue to transfer the type from the stiel( to the galley, until the space within the guard is filled.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of our invention or the scope of the subjoined Claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim,
1. The Combination with a printers galley having a rim provided with an overhanging flange, said rim being further provided with spaced openings arranged beneath the iange, of a miard arranged Within the galley and proviided at one end with a foot disposed at substantially a right angle thereto and adapted to Contact with the inner side of the rim, a pin secured to the foot near its free end and adapted to enter a selected opening, a reoiproeatory bolt Carried by the guard near the opposite end of the fooi; and
having an outer hooked end to engage beneath the overhanging llange, and a rain pivoted upon the holt and arranged to contact with the inner side of the foot.
2. The combination with a printers galley having a longitudinal rim and a longjitudinal scale, said rini being provided with an overhanging iange and spaced openings arranged beneath the overhanging iange, of a guard arranged within the galley and provided at one end with a foot disthe foot, Iand a lever eonneeteil with the rain 55 lo turn it.
In testinion)Y whereof we atix our signatures in plesenre of tivo Witnesses.
