Be it known that I, FRED H. PACKARD, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toe-Tip Measures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its objectto provide a measuring device or gage for the use of a boot or shoe laster to enable him to locate the rear end of the toe cap or tip at any desired predetermined distance from the extreme forward end of the toe. Prior to the lasting operation the toe cap or tip is stitched to the vamp, and the vamp and tip are applied together by the laster. There is often a lack of uniformity in locating the tip-blank on the Vamps, so that the rear end of the tip is not always at a uniform distance from the front edge of the vamp. It is desirable, therefore, in order to secure uniformity in the lasted upper to provide means whereby the laster may locate the rear end of the tip at a uniform distance from the toe of the shoe during the lasting operation.
My improved tip-measuring device hereinafter described consists in a plate having an outwardly-curved graduated edge adapted to conform to the upper surface of the vamp and toe-tip when the same have been conformed to the last along the median line of the shoe, and an inwardly curved or recessed edge formed to extend over the front portion of the tip andvamp and to engage said'portion in such manner that the curved graduated edge which measures the distance between the forward portion of the toe and the rear end of the tip will not slip easily out of place during the measuring operation.
The accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, represents a side view of my improved measure applied to a partiallylasted upper and toe-tip.
In the drawing, 4 represents a flat plate, which is preferably of metal and is provided with an outwardly-curved or convex edge a, shaped to conform to the upper surface of a vamp b and toe-tip 0 when said parts have been conformed to the median line of the last and confined at the toe portion by suitable means, such as a lasting-tack d. In usingthe above-described measure the laster applies the vamp and tip to the last and then applies the measure to the toe portion, as indicated in the drawing, and then adjusts the vamp and tip before attaching the same to the sole, the adjustment being such as to bring the rear end of the tip to the required distance from the forward end of the last, this distance being indicated by the graduations. on the edge a of the measure. I am aware that a toe-tip measure having a curved graduated edge a, and a shoulder or abutment projecting downwardly from said edge at the inner end thereof is not new. Heretofore, however, the said shoulder or abutment has had a straight edge arranged substantially at a right angle with the inner end of the curved edge a. Hence the said shoulder or abutment has not been adapted to engage the toe portion of the tip and prevent a tendency of the measure to swing upwardly in the direction indicated by the arrow w. My invention therefore is characterized by the recessed edge a formed to cooperate with the toe portion of the tip and last, as shown and described.
