JOSEPH LISBON, OF NEW BEDFORD, IVLASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY,
A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
TIP-MEASURER.
Application filed October 23, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn: Lrscox, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of New Bedford and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain Improvements in T ip-lVIeasurers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to improvements in tip measurers used by pullers over and other shoemaking operators to measure the distance at which the toe tip seam of shoes is located back from the end of the toe of the shoe. WVith the common use of high-toed lasts a difliculty has arisen in obtaining accurate measurements by the aid of hand devices heretofore commonly employed which consist of a plate having an edge conforming substantially to the contour of the upper front portion of a shoe. It is in practice impractical to make the edge conform sufficiently near to the contour'of the many-styles of more or less high-toed shoes to render the tool accurate on any wide range of styles. This invention has for its object to overcome this difiiculty, and a feature of the invention consists in a substantially rigid carrier which includes a toe end abutment and a poi-ti on extending toward the tip seam combined with a flexible measuring plate carried by the latter portion and adapted to be bent by pressure into the curve or depression between the toe. and the instep of a shoe so that it will lie flat across the tips of shoes on lasts of widely different styles.
The several features of the invention, ineluding certain details of construction, will appear from the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing, and will then be pointed out in the claims.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of the measurer in use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a shoe in longitudinal section.
The measurer is shown as consisting of a rigid metal plate 1 having in one edge a curvature corresponding broadly to the shape of a shoe toe and presenting a toe-end abutment at 2 and a carrier arm 4 adapted to extend backwardly over the shoe toe to- Ward the tip seam. To this carrier arm is Specification of Letters Patent.
of the Patented Sept. 17, 1918.
Serial No. 868,227.
secured a clamp 5 shown as a split block having in its lower end a way in which to receive the flexible plate 6. A screw 8 extending freely through one side member of the split block and threaded into the other side. member operates to close and clamp and grip the plate 6 by its opposite edges to hold it in adjusted lengthwise position in its carrier. The carrier arm t may have graduations marked on it with reference to which the flexible plate 6 may be adjusted as for example for styles of shoes which are to have different lengths of toe tips.
The plate 6 is thin and of such degree of resilience that it can be easily bent down to lie flat against the toe tip seam so that the distance of the seam from the toe end abutting face i of the measurer can be accurately noted at a glance. The flexible plate 6 will preferably have notches in its edge, 01' other graduations to assist the workman in noting exact lengths of toe tips. The ends plate 6 will preferably be upwardly bent to facilitate pressing it into engagement with the tip seam without danger of marking the finished surface of the shoe, either when the plate is bent into the depression between the instep and toe of the shoe. or when the resilient plate straightens out again as it does when the pressure thereon is discontinued.
Having explained the nature of this invention and described a preferred constructi n embodying the same, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of United States 1. A tip measurcr comprising a substantially rigid carrier including a toe end abutment and a portion extending toward the tip seam, a clamp carried by the latter portion and a flexible graduated plate adjustably held in said clamp and adapted to be bent into the curve on the top face of a shoe between the instep and the toe so as to lie flat in engagement with tip seams of shoes on lasts of different shapes.
2. A tip measurer comprising a substantially rigid carrier, including a toe end abutment and a portion extending toward the tip seam, a flexible plate having upwardly bent ends and regularly spaced notches in one edge, and means for securing said plate adjustably to the portion of the carrier extending toward the tip seamo 3. A device of the class described having, in combination, a carrier arm constructed and arranged for the application of pressure downwardly upon the top face of a shoe between the toe and the instep and having an abutment for the end of the toe, and a resilient plate mounted between its ends on said arm to extend lengthwise of the shoe and engage first by its ends and then to bend down into engagement with the tip seam of the shoe in response to pressure from the 'arrier arm.
4:. A device of the class described having, in combination a carrier arm constructed and arranged for the application of pressure downwardly upon the top face of a shoe between the toe and the instep and having an abutment for the end of the toe, and a thin resilient plate connected to the arm between the ends of the plate and having the ends of the plate free to bend upwardly in response to pressure from said arm to force the plate Conies 01 this patent may be obtained for into engagement with the tipseani of the shoe.
5. A tip measurer' comprising a plate formed to provide a toe end abutment for a shoe and a supporting arm extending above the shoe toe, and a flexible plate attached only to the supporting arm and adapted to be flexed by pressure of the device toward the shoe into the hollow between a high toe and the instep of the shoe into. contact with the tip seam, said plate having graduations to indicate the position of the tip seam relatively to the toe end abutment irrespectivcly of the height of the toe.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
