DRILL-PRESS GUARD.
Application filed July 28, 1924. Serial No. 728,431.
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to drill press guards.
Objects of this invention are to provide a drillpress guard in which no interference can be had with the chuck, in which the chuck and associate portions of the machine are fully encased, and in which the protecting means for guarding against inadvertent contact with the chuck is especially operated to give access to the chuck.
Further objects are to provide a drill press guard which may be attached to any type of drill press, which may be accurately and quickly adjusted to the conditions of the press and the work, which is provided with an adjustable stop to limit its downward motion, and which is securely and positively guided in an effective manner.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a diagrammatic side view of a portion of the drill press showing the guard in position and in section, such view corresponding to a section on the line l-1 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical elevation of the device as it appears when detached from the press, a portion of such Figure being in section.
Figure 2-3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan viewof the attaching means.
Figure is an enlarged sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 1.
The device is adapted to be applied to a standard type of drill press having a head 1, a spindle 2 and a rack feed 3 or similar member. The device is rigidly attached to the rack feed or spindle carrier 3 by means of a split bracket having a front portion 4 and a rear portion 5, as may be clearlyscen from Figure 4-. This bracket is provided with a cylindrical bore 6 adapted to receive the spindle holder feed member 3 and is provided with a rectangular cut out 7 adapted to accommodate the teeth 8 ofthc member 3. The two parts of this split bracket are held together by means of screws or other suitable means as indicated at 9. A stop screw 10 is threaded through one of the members of the bracket preferably the portion 5, and is provided with a knurled manipulating head. A look nut 11 is threaded upon this screw and provided with a handle 12 to facilitate its operation. l
The forward face of the bracket is provided with a machined boss 18(see Figure l) to which is attached the slotted strap 14. This slotted strap passes downwardly just in front of the head 1, as may be seen from Figure 1, and the slot 15 thereof receives the lug l6 ofa bracket 17 The bracket 16 is bolted to the head 1, as may be seen from Figures 1,2 and 5. A screw 18 is threaded into the lug 16 of the guiding bracket and is preferably provided with a washer 19 lightly bearing against the outer face of the guiding and supporting strap 14. The housing for the chuck comprises a cylindrical sheet metal member 20 which is securely attached by means of rivets 21 to the lower end of the strap 14c. This casing is provided with an inwardly extending bottom flange 22 provided with a relatively large aperture 23 through which the drill 24lprojects.
The chuck 25 is at all times completely housed within the casing 20 and the projecting portions of the chuck are therefore prevented from inadvertently coming in contact with any misplaced article such as the hand or clothes of the operator or portions of the work.
In order to provide free and easy access to the chuck 25, the lower portion of the casing 20 is split to provide a movable portion 26 forming in effect one half of the lower portion of the casing, the slit extend ing across the flan e 22, as may be seen from Figure 3. This portion 26 is hinged, as indicated at 27, to the body 20 of the casing, and it is free and is secured by means of a latch 28 to the body portion '20 when the device is closed. This latch is prefer ably provided with a small manipulating car 29, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, to facilitate its operation.
In using the device, the split bracket formed of the members 4 and 5, is clamped about the rack feed in its proper position.
Thereafter the stop screw 10 is set so as to arrest downward motion of the rack feed or spindle carrier 3 at the desired'point. When one class of work only is operated upon no further adjustment is; necessary. Any renewal of drills may be readily effected by opening the portion 26 of the casing-2 and operating the chuck. If any other thickness of work or type of Work is to be operated upon, the members 4- and 5 of the supporting splitbracket may be most readily adjusted' and clamped in anew position upon the feed member 3.
It is to be noted that the protecting casing for the chuck is securely positioned and accurately guided without 'any attachment to the lower portion of the spindle or spindle carrier. i i

The combination of -a' drill press having a head, a rack feed mounted therein, a spindle carried by said rack feed, a chuck carried by said spindle, tubular casing surrounding saidchuck, a slotted strap ex tending upwardly from said casing, a bracket" bolted to'said lieadand having a lug positioned within the slot of said strap, asplit bracket; carried by the upper; end of said strap andadapted to clamp about said rack feed, and a stop screw carried by said split bracket andnadapted to engage said head, said casing having an inwardly extending bottom flange and having a hingedly mounted portion giving access to said chuck.
2. The combination of a drill press having a head, a rack feed mounted therein, a spindle carried by said rack feed, a chuck carried by said spindle, a tubular casing surrounding said chuck, a guide-strap extending upwardly from said casing, a bracket bolted to said head. and having a guide-lug in slid'able engagement with the strap, a split bracket carried by the upper end of said strap a nd adapted to clamp about said rack feed, and a stop screw carriedby'said split bracket adapted to engagesaid head, said' casing having an inwardly extending bottom flange and having a hingedly mounted portion'giving access to said chuck. y
