STAY-BOLT-INSPECTION PORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 14, 1917. fierial No. 162,050.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, TBA D. Smerinnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stay-Bolt-Inspection Ports, of which the following is a :tull, clear, and exact description.
Periodic inspection of the stay bolts of boilers is required, and in cases where the boilers are provided with a heat insulating covering, it is now, so far as I know, always necessary to remove that part of the covering immediately above the stay bolt in order that this inspection may be made possible. This necessitates the mutilation or destruction of the covering at these points, and after inspection it must be replaced, which, in case of the coverings now in use, is a somewhat expensive procedure.
The object of my invention is to provide means for inspecting the stay bolts of boilers and the like, which are covered with heat insulating material, whereby the necessity for removing and mutilating or destroying the covering immediately over the stay bolts is obviated.
The invention consists in a plate adapted to be positioned over the stay bolt, and having an upstanding curb, which is provided with a cover having suitable means for securing it upon the curb, the whole device being held in place over the stay bolt by the application of the heat insulating material over the plate, all as I will proceed now to explain and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a plan view of a part of a boiler shell showing the device of my invention in place and partially covered with heat insulating material. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one form of cover, and Fig. 4c is a similar view of the plate and curb. Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification of the means for fastening the cover to the curb. Fig. 7 is a section taken in the plane of line A B, Fig. 5.
The boiler shell 1 is provided with any number of any usual or approved stay bolts, and for illustration I have shown a conventional form comprising a bolt 2 and spacing tube 3. Over the stay bolt :2 my inspection port is applied, and this inspection port comprises a plate 4 having anaperture surrounded by the upstanding curb 5, which is provided with a suitable screwthread 6. A. cover 7 is provided having a complemental screwthread 8 adapted to screw down into the curb 5, and this cover may be filled with heat insulating material, as shown at 9, or
it may be left open. In order to turn the cover out of the curb, the cover is provided with'a suitable hand-hold 10.
In place of the screwthread by which the cover is applied to the curb, I may provide a bayonet look, as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, comprising slots 11 in the curb and outstanding knobs 12 on the cover. The oper ation of this style of locking means is very well known, and therefore does not require description here.
The plate 4 and curb 5 may be formed of a single piece of sheet metal, and the cover 7 may also be formed of a single piece of sheet metal, and these parts are so shown in the drawings.
As shown, the ports are put in place first and then the insulating or non-conducting covering 13 in one or more layers or courses is built up around them so as to leave them exposed for ready access for inspection purposes.
Variations in the details of construction and arrangement of parts are within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with an insulating cov ering for boilers and the like, an inspection port applied over a stay bolt of the boiler, said port having a plate provided with an aperture, and a cover for closing said aperture.
2. In combination with an insulating covering for boilers and the like, an inspection port having a plate provided with an aperture applied over a stay bolt of the boiler, a curb surrounding said aperture, and a cover applied to said curb.
3. In combination with an insulating covering for boilers and the like, an inspection port applied over a stay bolt of the boiler and forming an opening through which said stay bolt may be inspected.
4. In combination with an insulating covering for boilers and the like, an inspection port applied over a stay bolt of the boiler and forming an opening through which said staly bolt may be inspected, and a closure for said openin Patented Apr-.31), rats.
5. In combination with an insulating covering for boilers and the like, an nspection port applied over a stay bolt of the boiler I curb and cover for retaining said cover on said curb 6. In combination with an insulating covering for boilers and the like, an inspection port applied over a stay bolt of the boiler and comprising a plate having an upstanding curb, said plate being held in position over said stay bolt by the application of the 15 heat insulating covering thereto, a cover having a cavity adapted to be filled with heat insulating material, interengaging means on said curb and cover for connecting the two, and means on said cover for disconnecting it from said curb.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of April A. D. 1917.
