barber's and household use and consists lib chiefly in means for providing the same with anti-friction balls on the under side of the operative part of the implement, in order that the latter may run freely over the patients skin in any direction without appreciable attrition, resistance or discomfort. More specifically the said invention consists in arranging such balls in a channel or elongated pocket fitted upon and held to the lower clipping plate of the implement, this attachment being preferably in the form of a metallic strap fitting against the lower face of said plate and having the channel or pocket constructed to retain said balls in a straight line on its under side. The said invention also consists in certain other details hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

This invention is applicable in its chief features to any form of hair-clipper designed to travel over the surface of the scalp or skin generally, but I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing a form which is very serviceable and to which the said invention may be conveniently applied.

The lower clipping plate 1 is provided with the usual clipping teeth 2 and with an opening 3 near these teeth for receiving a downward lug 4 on the forward edge of Specification of Letters Patent.

a dome-like casing 5, integral with the handle 6. Said casing is also provided at a point diametrically opposite to said lug with a stud 7 fitting into a corresponding hole 8 of said lower clipping plate 1. By reason of these two pairs of engaging parts the lower clipping plate 1 will be held securely to the said handle and easing without independent motion. Said lower plate is also provided with a raised central pivot 9 for a tubular bearing 10 on the operative end of the other handle 11; also with a recess 12 near said stud 7, which recess receives one end of a coiled spring 13, the other end of the said spring fitting into an. eye 1d of the operative part of the latter handle. The upper clipping plate 15 has the usual teeth or serrations 16 like those of the lower clipping plate and rests on and rcciprocates laterally over the upper face of said lower plate in the usual manner. Said upper plate has a slot 17 formed in it above the opening 3 and registering therewith to permit the passage of the lug 4 down through said slot into said opening. This slot, however, is elongated laterally in both directions beyond the limits of said openings to permit the lateral reciprocation of said upper clipping plate. The latter also has an opening. 18 which may communicate with slot 17 for convenience of manufacture and which receives a lug 19 turned down 011 the forward end of the operating part of handle 11. The casing 5 carried by handle 6 has a central hole 20 to allow the upward protrusion of the upper part of pivot 9, which upper part is screw threaded to receive a nut 21 holding the parts to gether. Between said casing and said spring a washer 22 is located to facilitate the work of the spring and guard against abrasion. The said hole 20 and the corresponding part of the pivot are not circular, but guard against turning by irregularity of form, preferably by lateral flattening in Fig. i as to the pivot and in Fig. 2 as to the hole 20, The flattening of course may be on two sides or more than two, but one flat side prevents turning, as shown. The said casing protects the operative inner parts and especially the spring above described,

The implement is, of course, propelled over the surface of the scalp to be clipped, during the above mentioned operation, takin any course and direction which may be found best for eifectually removing the hair.

@f course, in so doing it encounters friction, as such devices have hitherto been constructed, and must cause some discomfort to the person whose head is undergoing clipping. To obviate this I have provided an antifriotion traveling surface by attaching to the said lower clipping plate 1 a metallic under strap or plate 23 extending from side to side across the said lower clipping plate and provided with a long dovetailed channel or pocket 24 on its under side containing a straight row or series of anti-friction balls 25. These balls extend below'said channel or pocket and bear directly on the scalp of the patient. Whether the clipper be then propelled directly forward or drawn backward or pushed or pulled obliquely in any direction or moved sidewise to right or left, the balls, 25 will turn freely, reducing all friction to a negligible quantity. Most often the movement will be mainly forward in some oblique direction which will bring the balls naturally into play with no risk of scratching or catching or sticking, a risk or injury which could not be prevented in such circumstances with any certainty by any other form or kind of friction reducing mechanism. edges of said plate. When there need to supply a new strap or ball or to remove these parts for any purpose, separation may be effected by bending back these bent ends. Their stiffness is, however, suiiicient. to guard against any accidental dislodgement by ordinary means. The said strap may be made in an Y feasible way. A convenient plan is to use two layers of metal soldered. or brazed or welded together, the upper layer providing the flexible bent arms and the bottom of the inverted pocket for the anti-friction balls and the lower layer providing the side walls of the pocket. said lower layer being slit to leave flaps or flanges bent into the form shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A hair clipper comprising an upper clipping plate, a lower clipping plate and a strap arranged on the lower surface o1" said lower plate, said strap having parts which are bent on said lower plate, for removahly attaching said strap thereto. and being prorided with an elongated, pot-hot having a downwardly presented opening and containing a row of anti-fricti m balls, which protrude through said opening into contact with the patients head.

2. A hair clipper comprising an upper clipping plate a lower clipping plate and a strap removably attached to the said lower plate and arranged on the under surface thereof, said strap being provided with a pocket containing anti-friction balls and having a downwardly presented opening through which these balls protrude for con tact with the patients head.
