INVENTOR. WITNESSES: v
(1 Gem 6 P W2 zmorz adjusted The clamping members 6 have sockets 7 for the'removable posts 8. The sheets or leaves 9 are provided with notches 10 adapted to receive the binding strips 3, the notches being open at the rear edge of the sheets, and with holes 11 adapted to receive the posts 8. These holes are closed so that when the posts areengaged therewith the sheets canbe removed except as they are lifted freed by the arrangementof parts is substantially that' shown in my said Letters Patent above referred to.
- I provide a to receive one prising, in the structure illustrated,'the cover and clamping bar, and support the same so that the pair of holders each adapted and 13, in Fig. I of the \"l-rawing, are mounted on a pair of supporting basemembers 14/ The holder 12 comprises a side member 15 and an end .member '16, while the holder 13 comprises a side member 17 and an end member 18. he end members are mounted in a relatively fixed relation with their upper cdgesmeeting. The end members have registering slots 45 adapted to receive the binding strips. The side members are mounted on pivots 19 so that they may be swung to coaeting relation with the end members of the holders, as shown in Fig. Ill, for instance, or to a horizontlil or an approximately horizontal position, shown in Fig. V1 The side members are adj ustably supported on their pivots by the slotted links 20 pivotally eonnected to the inner ends of the side members at 21 and having teeth adapted to engage the bolts 23. The bolts are provided with clamping nuts for securing the links in their ositions.
Witht ,e. parts thus arran ed, the side members of the holders may he swung to their horizontal position to receive the binder members in arrenging the binder in the holder and with the binder members resting thereon swung into position to coact with the end members of the holders and the inner ends of thesheets adjusted against the end members of the holders.
The end members of thoholders are preferably arranged so that the end member 16 is at rlght angles to its coectmg side mere;
of the binder members com-' sheets may be arranged thereon. These holders, which I designate generally by the numerals 1:2
responding to the indieia on the ber 15 when the side member is swmw to operative position, thereby assisting in alincin the sheets to receive the posts.
The end member 18 is preferably disposed at an acute angle to its coacting side member 17 so that when the sheets are adjusted on the holder their outer ends are supported in a stepped relation to fac litate the. fingering of the sheets.
To assist in alining the slots and holes of the sheets I provide the a guide 24 and the end member 18 with a similar guide 25, the notches of the sheets being adapted to be engaged with these guides. 'The guide 2% is made ren'iovablc so that it may be removed to permit the adjustment of the binder members in closing the binders. To facilitate this the end member 16 ot' the holder 12 is slotted at. 26 and provided with a pair of slide plates 27 (or the slide 28 secured to the guide so that it may be inserted nal movement.
This guide is also preferably adapted as a. gage, being provided with a scale 29 having indicia thereon indicatinfr the proper length of post to be used, that is, the thiclo ness of the shoot body as indicated by the scale indicates the proper length of post.
To further facilitate the selection of posts I mount a holder {10 having a series 01 l)()l'l\'* ets ill for sets of 'posts of dill crent lenu'l This holder is mounted on the back ol' the holder side member IT so that the posts project above the upper edge thereof. The pockets are provided with indicia 3:3 coruide 24:.
With the parts thus arranged the Zheets may be readily disposed on one of the binder members, either part of the sheets oll'set and they are guided so that the removable posts may be readily inserted and the binding strips swung, into the slots. When one binder member is adjusted upon the other the guide 24- is removcd so as not to interfere with the alining of the same thereon.
In the modification'shown in Figs. IX and X the side members of the holder'are hinged at to the end members, the outer ends of the holders being supported by links This embodiment does not have the advantage of side members adjustable to a horizontal position? In the embodiment shown in Figs. Xl and XII the holders 3% and 35 are formed integrally of a piece or metal suitably shaped. These holders are supported bya base comprising bottom member 36 having, feet 37 thereon and uprights 38 conformed to fit the side and end members of the holder and riveted to the base, the end members having registering slots 39 adapted to receive the binding strips. The end member of the holder 34: is provided with a removable guide and removed. by longitudicnd member 16 with in an :llined body or with.
till
40 having headed studs 4E1 on its rear sid.e adapted to engage the slots 42. The upper end. of the guide is curved to :tit over the apex of the end members which is also curved.
My improved binder device greatly facilitates the use of temporary binders for the keeping of records, particularly where it, is desired to keep such records on typeu m ing machines. The sheets are supported. :30 that they are ll readily accessible and. the wear and. tear on the sheets in handling is minimized.
I hate illustrated and described my improvements in a practical embodiment. l have shown certain modifications which it findsatisfactory and desirable for certain conditions and uses but have not attempted. to illustrate or describe-all the modifications which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the are to which my invention relates to era-- body or adapt the same as conditions may require.
