To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moses BOMBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain View Hotel, Cumru Township, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to explosive engines having cooling water jackets, and consists in an improved relative arrangement of the valve housings as fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is mainly a sectional View, on the lines 11 of Figs. 2 and 3, of an engine cylinder embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar View, but taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings 5 represents a cylinder of an explosive engine formed with a closing head 6 and an integral water jacket 7 surrounding the upper portion thereof. This jacket is preferably extended above the cylinder as shown to form a cooling tank and is advantageously made with inclined walls to allow for expansion in case of freezing during cold weather.
At the upper end of. the cylinder 5 are formed inlet and exhaust ports 10 and 11 respectively, spaced at right angles to each other and extending to the water jacket 7, and communicating through openings 12 and 13 with valve housings 14 and 15. The housings and ports are preferably formed integrally with the cylinder and water jacket as shown, and are provided respectively with a charge inlet 16 and an exhaust outlet 17 through the wall 7 of the water jacket for connection with the carbureter and muffler, not shown. These openings 16 and 17 are arranged in the same horizontal plane 33 but in different parallel vertical planes as shown by the lines 1A and B1.
Screw-threaded openings 2021 through the over-hanging bottom wall 8 of the water jacket permit of the introduction of valve cages 22 and 23 into the housings 1 1 and 15, said cages seating in the openings 1213 and being secured in place by nuts 24.- and 25 screwed into the openings 2021. The valve cages carry valves 26 and 27 controlling communication between the housings 14: and 15 and their respective ports 10 and 11.
A. spark plug opening 30 in the wall 7 of the water jacket extends into the port 10 to permit of exploding the compressed charge in the cylinder as usual.
. The water within the jacket 7 of my improved oylinder surrounds the separated valves while the latter are conveniently arranged for connection of the attached carbureter and mufiler and the ready introduction of the valve cages.
l Vhat I claim is: I
An explosive engine having a cylinder with a closed head and an integrally formed water jacket surrounding the upper portion thereof; said surrounding portion of the water jacket having integrally formed valve housings therein provided with scparate cylinder ports arranged at substantially right angles in one horizontal plane, charge inlet and charge outlet openings respectively arranged in another horizontal plane and in diiferent vertical planes, and vertical valve-cage openings through the bottom of the jacket; an apertured closure plug in each of said bottom openings; and a valve cage in said housing, extending through said apertureol plug and carrying a valve having a stem guided in said extending portion.
