UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.

gines of the type mainly used for vehicle propulsion and marine purposes, and has for its object an improved construction in which the cylinder head is detachable and inwhich a compact and easily molded combustion space is provided, the valves are arranged'in a simple manner in the head, a minimum perimeter and a minimum area exposed to explosion pressure between cylinder and head obtained, and a very simple form of main cylinder body casting results.
unless desired for some The improvements are more particularly applicable to an engine in which the cylinders are cast en bloc or in en bloc groups.
In an engine made according to the invention, the combustion space arranged in the detachable cylinder head is of conoidal or ungulate form. The inlet and exhaust valves are arranged side-by-side at one side of the combustion space, and are of such area and are placedwith their axes at such an inclination to the cylinder axis that they may be withdrawn diagonally inward through the detached cylinder head. Thus cages or blocks for them are unnecessary other reason. F urthermore, the areaxof the valves, the angle of their positionthat 1s, their distance from the axis of the cylinder-is such that the combustion space is not ocketed to any extent to receive themratlier, they may be said to be received upon the base of a hollow doubly ungular space.
An example of the carrying out of the invention in the case of a four cylinder engine in which the cylinders are cast en bloc is shown in four accompanying sheets ofexplanatory drawlngs, Figure 1, Sheet .1, whereof is a sectional plan to the leftand an inverted lan to the right, Figs. 2 and 3, Sheets 2 an 3, sectional side elevations on two planes, and Fig. 4, Sheet 4, a sectional end elevation.

valves B, C, are arranged side-by-side at one side of the combustion space, and are of such area stantially through the top of the head and ht angles to the valves.
access to the valves and their parts.
What I claim is 1. In an internal combustion engine, an engine cylinder and a detachable head therefor recessed on its inner face to afford a combustion space of the conoidal or ungulate form described, in combination with inlet and exhaust valves arranged in the side wall of said recess forming the combustion space, and with their axes so inclined that they may be withdrawn through said space in the cylinder head when the latter is detached together with a valveoperating means arranged at the side of the cylinder in the main cylinder casing and below said removable head to permit the ready detachment of the latter.
In an internal engine cylinder and for recessed on its combustion space of form described, in and exhaust valves combustion engine, an a detachable head thereinner face to afford a the conoidal or ungulate combination with inlet arranged side by side in the side wall of said recess forming the combustion space, and with their axes in the same plane with relation to the cylinder axis and so inclined that they maybe withdrawn through said space in the cylinder head when the latter is detached together with a valve-operating means arranged, at-
the side of the cylinder in the main cylinder casing and below said removable head to permit the ready detachment of the latter.
3. An, engine of the construction recited in claim 1, having in combination therewith an exhaust passage extending substantially through the top of the head and an inlet passage in the head for connection with a lateral inlet manifold.
4:. In an internal combustion engine, an engine cylinder and a detachable head therefor recessed on its inner face to afford a combustion space of the conoidal or ungulate form described, having oppositely inclined side walls, one of said walls being apertured to afford inlet and outlet ports for the com- 1,sea,eee
bustion chamber, and the opposed side wall being apertured to receive an ignition device, the relative inclination and arrangement of said walls with relation to each other and to the cylinder being such as to permit the inward withdrawal of the valves through said combustion space when the cylinder head is detached together with valve operating means supported on a portion of the engine casing independentof said removable head to permit of ready detachment of the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
