Description

R.'A. GALLY.
PNEUMATIC DIAPHRAGM -FOLLOWER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV- 9, I917- Patented Apr. 16, 1918.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT A. GALLY, or CINCINNATI, onro, ASSIGNOR TO THE BALDWIN COMPANY, or CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PNEUMATIC-DIAPHRAGM FOLLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1918.
Application filed November 9. 1917. Serial No. 201,099.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. GALLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, inthe county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic- Diaphragm Followers, of which the following is a specification.
In thisapplicants prior Patent 1,153,056, is stated the desirability of a small central gumming of the leather of the pouch to the followers, thus having a free pouch (page 1, line 110, and page 2, lines 1 and 2) and in a present co-pending application #200385 is shown and claimed an improved means to aid the small central attachment of the pouch or diaphragm to its follower, both said showings having the pouch extended in one general plane over the central part of the face of the follower to which such pouch was attached, the later showing having an annular variation in the face of the follower to limit the extent of adhesion of the pouch to the diaphragm, but in both of said showings such extent of attachment had to be greater in area than the vent disk at the center of the follower, when such vent disk is used.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view of a circular pneumatic diaphragm or pouch 1 with its follower button 2, the pouch 1 being attached around its edge to the edge of the usual socket 3; Fig. 2 is a plan of the follower button 2 viewed from beneath; Fig. 3 a plan of the pouch 1 viewed from beneath and before the disk 1 is inserted, while Fig. 4 is a similar View after the disk 1 is set in, Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of parts shown in Fig. 1.
In the present application the extent of attachment of the pouch 1 to its follower 2 is only equal to the area of such central disk 4, such disk being employed to aid the holding of the central part of the pouch 1 to the follower 2, the pouch material being laid into the central recess 5 which contains the disk 4, and the disk at being forced into the said recess 5 on top of the material of the said pouch 1 and thus clamping the pouch 1 to the follower 2, but with a minimum area of the pouch 1 so held, the larger part of the pouch 1 being left free to aid its yielding to a sensitive movement to and fro by the action of the air which controls its motion.
Adhesive matter may be used in the central recess 5, when inserting the material of the diaphragm or pouch 1, and adhesive may also be employed between the disk 4: and the pouch material, or for only one or the other place, although if the fit of the disk 4t and recess 5 is correct to allow for the material of the diaphragm l, and such material does not vary too much, all adhesive may be omitted.
As now shown the central disk 1 has a vent or bleed (3 at its center, but an imperforate disk, or an eyelet, could be em ployed to hold the pouch 1 to its follower 2 when no vent or bleed is required, as when the pouch is actuated from a double valve air control. When a vent as 6 is included in the disk t, a duct or leader 7 is provided in the button 2 and alined with the vent 6 and leading to the air out-side the button 2 as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
lVith the present form of attaching a pouch to its follower button, the utmost freedom of the pouch is assured, and with certainty that every one will be the same, an important item in the use of pouch or diaphragm pneumatics, especially when of small size, say having only 5} diameter of follower and 1-3; socket, and particularly when used for delicate and rapid action, as for music players, type setting devices, etc.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. A flexible diaphragm having a follower button attached thereto at its central part, the said follower having a central recess into which the central part of the said dia phragm is laid, and a member snugly set into the said recess over the said central part of the said diaphragm, and an element having a socket therein, the central part of the said diaphragm freely disposed across said socket, and the outer part of said diaphragm attached to said element outside the edge of said socket.
2. A flexible diaphragm having a follower button attached thereto at its central part, the said follower having a circular central recess into which the central part of the said diaphragm is laid, and a member snugly set into the said recess over the said central part of the said diaphragm, and an element having a socket therein, the central part of the said diaphragm freely disposed across said socket, and the outer part of said diaphragm attached to said element outside the edge of said socket.
3. A flexible diaphragm having a follower button attached thereto at its central part, the said follower having a central recess into which the central part of said diaphragm is laid, and an inserted member snugly set into the said recess over the said central part of the said diaphragm, said inserted member having a central aperture, and the said diaphragm having a central aperture opposite the said aperture of the inserted member, and a duct in said follower alined with said central apertures.
serted member having a central aperture,"
and the said diaphragm having a central aperture opposite the said aperture of the inserted member, and a duct in said follower alined with said central apertures.
