Description

E. F. VANDERBOSCH.
GARMENT LINK. APPLICATION FILED JAN. I0, l9l8- 1,263,006? Patented Apr. 16,1918.

Avian/r01? EDWARD F. VANDERBOSCH, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA;
GARMENT-LINK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1c, 1918.
Application filed January 10, 1918. Serial No. 211,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. VANDER- BOSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Links, of which the following is a I specification.
My invention relates to the provision of an improved button or link for securing the cuffs of a sleeve and for like purposes, and the object of the invention resides more specifically in the provision of a button or link for the purpose intended, which is designed to link two parts of a garment together, as the cuffs of a shirt, and which is adapted to secure the-button or link to one part of the garment in a manner to prevent accidental disconnection and possible loss thereof.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged elevation of the button. i
Fig. 2 is an elevation viewed sidewise from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary and greatly exaggerated sectional view taken on line 3, 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the details of structure, the button comprises a head 5, suitably mounted on or, as may be preferred, integrally formed with the stem 6, which latter is preferably slightly curved as shown, and bifurcated to provide spaced and oppositely disposed sections 7 the ends of which are suitably secured to a base 8 of any suitable form. As shown, the head and base are disposed at a relative angle, so that said members will more snugly fit against the surface of the converging cuff ends held together by the button, as is well understood in the art. Obviously, the stem may also be made straight and the head and base in parallelism, when conditions of use so require.
Mounted between the stem sections 7, are clasps 10, having enlarged adjoining ends formed with gear teeth 11 which intermesh,
and which clasps swing on pivots 12 as shown. The clasps are thus adapted to be swung in parellelism with the opposite sides of the stem 7 so as not to interfere with the passage of the head 5 through the button hole of a garment, and thence swung downwardly, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, until their free ends engage the garment, so that the base will prevent movement of the button in one direction and the clasps in the opposite direction, thereby effectually preventing accidental separation of the button from the garment.
Obviously, as the clasps 10 are intergeared, movement of one imparts a like movement to the other, and the manner of holding the clasps in any position of adjustment constitutes the most salient feature of the invention. This is accomplished in a most simple and effectual manner by providing the stem 6 with a long cut or slit 13, transverse the plane of movement of the clasps and intermediate thereof. Before mounting the clasps a suitable instrument is forced into the slit to slightly wedge apart the opposing stem portions formed by the slit. In other words, said stem portions are relatively sprung, so that, afterthe clasps are mounted, and the instrumentremoved, the tendency of the stem portions so sprung to assume their normal position will exert a tension in the direction of each other, which will be opposed by the contacting geared ends of the clasps so that the latter will be held in binding engagement requiring some force to swing the same on their pivots. It will thus be apparent that the clasps will be held by such binding action in any position of adjustment, and. this without the addition of any separate element to the button structure for effecting such action.
What is claimed is 1. A garment link comprising a stem having a longitudinal slit therethrough and enlarged end members, and clasps having terminal intermeshing gear teeth pivotally mounted on the stem and on opposite sides of said slit, the stem being spread apart at its slitted portion to produce a tension adapted to force the geared ends of the clasps in the direction of each other.
2. A garment link comprising a base, a
bifurcated stem mounted thereon having a the slits therein, the stem being spread apart 7 longitudinal slit transverse of and through at its slitted portion to produce a tension each branch of its bifurcatedportion, ahead adapted to force the geared ends of the 1 member mounted on the stem, and clasps clasps in the direction of each other.
5 having terminal intermeshing 7 gear teeth In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
pivotally mounted on the stem between its bifurcated portion and on opposite sides of EDWARD F. VANDERBOSCH.
