Application filed. September 11,1915. Serial No. 50,129.
eral character having novel and improved means whereby the extremities of the shanks of the pin may be flexed with convenience and facility in order to maintain the pin in applied position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cotter pin whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more .fully set forth. 7
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim,
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceedto describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a cotter pin constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a cotter pin of well known construction and having the free extremities of the shanks 1 thereof reduced longitudinally, as at 2-, said reduction being preferof which the following is a specification, reference being ably made by having the shanks cut-away, as is'clearly shown'i'n the accompanying drawings. In view of the foregoing, it will be perceived that the reduced extremities of the shanks permit a fiexure of the shanks with the opposed faces of,
convenience and also aflord an opening through which a suitable implement may be conveniently disposed in order to obtain the requisite flexure of the shanks. Furthermore, it will be perceived that the shoulders 3 afford predetermined points of flexure.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a cotter pin constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown ,in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a cotter pin having the opposed faces of the end portions of the shanks thereof cut-away to af- 1 ford reduced extremities, the inner ends of the reduced portions of the shanks being defined by shoulders.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
