Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 16, 191.8;
Application filed November 4, 1916. Serial No. 129,576.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (VILLIAM C. CoHooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hood River, in the county of Hood River and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Scratchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a match scratcher and has for its primary object, the provision of a device of this character which will be of inexpensive construction and which may be secured upon a coat or other article of wearing apparel.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a match scratcher which will include a case or frame for holding a sheet of sand paper or the like and a normally closed door for the open side of the frame or case.
For a further object, the invention contemplates the provision of a match scratcher of the above stated character, in which the case or frame will be provided with a novel frame having a hinged side and means for resiliently retaining said side in closed position.
/Vith these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several iews,
Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete device with the door in open position, and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on a plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow and showing the door in closed position, the open position of the door being indicated in this view by dotted lines.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,
'1 designates a sheet of sand paper or the like which may be readily and removably positioned in the case or frame 2, which latter may be formed of metal or some other suitable material and the body portion of which forms the back of the case or frame, one side 3 and the ends 4 being extended at right angles and then again turned and. ex,
tended in a plane parallel with the main or body portion of the material forming the back of the case or frame.
The remaining side of the case or frame, designated by the numeral 5, is only extended at a right angle to the body or back of the case or frame and the flap 6 is mounted upon the same by means of a hinge rod 7 extended through the hinge members 8 carried by said side 5 and said flap 6. A spring 9 is positioned upon the hinge rod 7 to resiliently retain the flap 6 in closed position and in the same plane with the portions of the case at and side 3 corresponding to said flap 6.
In order to cover the sheet 1, I have provided a door 10 which is mounted upon the hinge rod 11 and extended through hinge members 12 carried by said door 10 and by the side 3. A spring 13 is also mounted upon the hinge rod ll to resiliently retain the door 10 in closed position.
From the foregoing, it will be readily seen that the sheet 1, may be inserted or removed when the flap 6 is in open position. It will also be evident that it is simply necessary to open the door 10 for the purpose of scratching a-match upon the sheet 1, a spring 13 automatically closing the door 10 when the latter is released.
In order that the device may be readily secured in position I have mounted a pin 14 upon the outer face of the body of the case or frame 2 and having its point adapted for removable engagement with the catch 15 also mounted upon said case or frame 2. The pin and catch are shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
While the form of the invention described and illustrated is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment of the same, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto, as minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from. the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as new is 1. A holder of the character described comprising a back, walls of substantially L- shape in cross section secured to the transverse marginal edges and one of the longitndinal edges of the same, a wall secured to the o posite longitudinal edge of the block anc extending at right angles thereto, a wall extending inwardly and, at right angles to the last mentioned Wall and hingedly connected therewith, the Walls sur= rounding the back defininga relatively large elongated opening and an article receiving coniipartment, and a cover resiliently retained in position to cover the elongated opening.
2. An article holder comprising a back, right angular extending Walls rigidly secured to one of the longitudinal edges, and the transverse edges of the back, a Wall secured to the opposite longitudinal edge of the back and extending at right angles to the same, a Wall bearing against the latter Wall and inwardly and at right angles to the 15 san1e,,-a hinge connection between the latter two Walls and a cover resiliently retained against the hinged Wall and the L-shaped Walls.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature as in presence of tWo Witnesses.
