Be it known that l, EDGAR B. Tnnr'ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sherman, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain useful Improvements in `Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in that class of inventions known as builders hardware, and more particularl y relates to a window lock.
ns the primary aim and object the present invention contemplates the provision of novel cooperative means carried by a window casing and by a window sash Whereby the sash may be held in various positions of vertical adjustment or if desired the sash may be removably locked in a closed position.
t is an additional and equally important obj ect of this invention to provide manually operable cam levers on the lock body, consequently controlling the actuation of the lock.
It is a more specific object of the present invention to provide improved resilient pawls integral with the body for coperation with the opposed teeth on the strip; and to provide improved means for mounting the manually operable levers.
Among the other aims and objects of the present invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the eiiiciency high.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brought out more in detail in the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention, should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein is disclosed for the purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention. It is to be noted in this connection that various minor changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the principle of operation of the various parts.

Similar reference characters are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a window casing l in which is slidably mounted a sash 2. The strip 3 is mounted on the inner edge of the window casing l and arranged adjacent the inner side of the lower sash 2 and assists in guiding the vertical sliding movement of the lower sash.
The outer face of the strip?) is provided adjacent its lower edge with a projection l while extending from the outer face above the projection are a plurality of teeth 5., The teeth 5 extend upwardly while other teeth 6 are formed on the outer edge of the strip lbeneath the projection and are positioned so as to extend opposite from the teeth 5.
Cooperating with the toothed strip is an improved lock for holding the lower sash in a closed position or in various positions of vertical adjustment. In the present instance the lock consists of a body 7 which is rigidly secured to the outer face of the lower sash 2 by means of suitable fastening devices 8, and vwhen the sash is in a lowered or closed position the body is preferably arranged approximately opposite the projection t. The inner edge of the body 7 is arranged in close relation with theA outer edges of the teeth as indicated by the numeral 9 while pawls 10 and l1 are formed respectively on the upper and lower ends. The engaging faces of the pawls are curved rearwardly as indicated by the numeral-12 while the rear faces thereof are curved toward the straight edges as indicated by the numeral 13 leaving relatively thin resilient portions 14. of which the body is formed and because of :the construction of the pawls they are nor mally held in yielding engagement with certain of the teeth but may be readily pressed away from engagement with the teeth when it is so desired. As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 the pawl is adapted to coperate with the Vteeth 5, in holding the window sash in vaprovided with a vertical slot 15 while pivotally mounted adjacent the upper end of the slot by means of a transversely extending pin 16 is a manually operable cam lever 17. A handle 18 is formed on the outer end of the lever and when this abuts Vthe lower end of the slots as indicated in Fig. 2 it of course will be appreciated that upward movement of the sash is prevented but when the handle is swung upwardly the outer end of the cam lever 17 will engage the inclined edge 19 of the adjacent tooth 6 so as to remove the pawl 11 from engagement iith the tooth 6 with which itis in engagement to consequently permit of the vraising of the sash.
In order to 'provide suitable means for releasing the upper pawl 12 from engagement with the tooth 5 so that thesash may be consequently lowered, the `pawl 10 is provided with a vertical slot 2O in which is pivoted adjacent the upper end by means of a transverse pin 21 a manually operable cam lever 22 on the outer end of which is formed a handle 23. When the handle 23 is in the raised position as indicated in Fig. 2 the enlarged end thereof lios within the outer edge of the pawl 10 but when this lever is moved downwardly until the shoulder 23 stril-res the lower end of the slot the engaging end of the lever will be moved outwardly so as to consequently cooperate with the adjacent tooth 5 and press the pawl 10 from engagement with the teeth to consequently permit of the lowering of the sash.
