TOBACCO-CUTTER.
Application led July 18, 1917.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ulysses, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Cutters, of which the following is a speeilieation.
This invention relates to cutters especially adapted to be used for severing plug tobacco and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a cutter of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which may be used upon a counter or other support for cutting a plug of tobacco into sections.
Vith this object in view the cutter comprises a base upon which is mounted a frame with a lever pivoted thereon. A shaft is mounted for vertical movement upon the frame and a link operatively connects the said shaft with the lever. A blade is rotatably mounted upon the shaft and guided between the side portions of the frame. The said blade is preferably rectangular in side elevation and is provided with angularly 'disposed cutting edges. Spaced lugs are carried at one side of the blade. Combined Scrapers and Sharpeners are attached to the same and bear against the opposite sides of the blade at the edge thereof. An arm is pivotally mounted upon the frame and is provided with a crotch which is adapted to receive the lugs when the blade is elevated and partially Jurn the same.
In the accompanying drawingsr- Figure l is a side elevation of the tobacco cutter;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 isl a side elevation of the cutter viewing the same at theopposite sides from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4- is a fragmentary sectional view of the cutter.
Fig. 5 is an end view of the same.
The tobacco cutter comprises a base 1 which may be made of wood or any other suitable material. A frame is mounted upon the base l and the frame comprises standards 2 and standards 3. 'Ihe standards are arranged in pairs and the corresponding members of the pairs of standards are connected together by means of cross bars 4. The standards 3 are somewhat taller than the standards 2. A lever 5 is pivoted between the upper ends of the standards 3.

Serial No. 181,336.
Spaced guides 6 are located at one side of the said frame and are connected at their upper ends with one of the bars 4. The lower ends of the guides 6 are connected by means of a bar 7 with one of the standards A shaft 8 is mounted for vertical movement between the guidesG and a link 9 is pivotally connected at one end with the said shaft 8 and pivotally connected at its other end with the lever 5. A blade 10 is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 8 and is located between the opposite sides of the said frame. The said blade 10 is preferably rectangular in side elevation and is provided with angularly disposed cutting edges. Combined cleaners and Sharpeners 11 are secured to the standards 3 and the lower portions of the said cleaners and Sharpeners are inwardly disposed and bear against the opposite sides of the blade l0 at the edge thereof. An arm l2 is pivoted to one of the standards 3 and extends in a downward direction along one side of the blade l0. The arm 12 is` provided in the vicinity of its lower end with a crotch 13 which is adapted to receive successively lugs 14, the said lugs being located upon the side of the blade l0 and spaced from each other and spaced at equal distances from the center of the said blade.
When the free end of the lever 5 is swung in an upward direction, one of the lugs lll upon the blade 10 will enter the crotch 13 of the arm 12 and as the blade l0 and the shaft 8 are moved in an upward direction by the link 9 the said arm 12 will turn the blade l0 upon the shaft 8 so that the edge lof the blade l0 which was previously vertically disposed will be moved to a horizontal position between the opposite sides of the frame. Consequently the edge of the blade 10 which previously was in a horizontal position is carried between the cleaners and Sharpeners 11 and any material which might have accumulated upon the said cutting edge is re- Leanser @unica el this patent may be obtainedvor draw- Atobacco cutter coinprising'a frame, a l
guides carried by the frame, a shaft mounted for .movement vbetween the guides, a link operatively connecting the shaft with the le-A ver, a blade journaled upon the shaft, lugs carried at the side of the blade, and an arm pivoted` to the frame at the pivot of the lever and provided With a crotch adapted to receive the s'aidlugs successively.
