PORTER B. HAND, OF HANDSBOROUGH, ASSIGNOR TO LOREN M. HAND, OF MOSS POINT, MISSISSIPPI.
G A N G E D G E R SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,925, dated October 7, 1890.
Application filed July 19, 1889. Serial No. 318,028. (No model.)
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PORTER BRISTOL HAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Handsborough, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Gang- Edger; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the [0 art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a gang-edger, in which a lever is made to 0perate in conjunction with saws; and the ob- I 5 jects of my invention are to provide an edger that may be raised when desired to be used, and lowered when not in use. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a side view of arm.
Similarlet-ters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In constructing my device I place upon a 2 5 shaft, say, three saws, as shown by A. These saws are secured by collars with arm Lwhich arm is placed on a lower shaft K, said shaft K being so constructed as to permit arms I to be raised or lowered. In the drawings, as
shown by Fig. 2, only one arm is shown, but two or more may be used. B are levers for raising or lowering the frame in which the saws are placzd. C is a counter-weight. D is a frame. E are rollers. G is a lumbertrack. F is a guard. H is a frame.
In operating my device, as lumber is sawed and placed on rollers on track G, I raise my edger by means of levers B. Lumber passes over rollers E and comes in contact with saws A. Then my edger is lowered, guard Fforms a portion of track G, and as lumber is sawed it passes onto rollers E and over my gang edger, and by this means, by simply using a lever,
I place my edger in use, thereby saving time and labor.
The guard F, which has a roller journaled in one end, is pivoted at its opposite end to the frame in which the saws are j ournaled.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gang-edger, the combination, with a suitable frame, of the vertically -movable frame D, pivotally secured therein, the sawshaft journaled in said frame D, the shaft K, also journaled in said frame, the armsI, connecting the saw-shaft with the shaft K, the guard F, carrying a roller and hinged to the frame D, the levers B, one of which is pivoted to the main frame and also to the vertically 6o movable frame carrying the saws, and the other one having a counterbalance-weight secured to its outer end, and a hand-lever for raising and lowering the saws and guard, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
