Description

D. F. CURTIN.
CUP 0R CONTAINER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 28, l9l5- Patented Mar. 26, 1918.
CUP OB CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 28,}915. Serial No. 36,769.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. CURTIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chi-,
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinow, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cups or Containers. of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to cups or receptacles formed of light flexible material adapted to fit within and be supported by a suitably formed holder when in service.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and convenient cup of the kind described which may be formed of paper or other suitable inexpensive material and which may be packed or nested together for shipment or storage thus permitting their convenient renewals at a comparatively low cost.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like or similar reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a suitable blank for forming a cupembodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of my improved on Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken substantially on line 3--3 of Fig. 2 showing the thickness of the walls and the waterproof coating greatly exag erated.
Fig. 4 is a view 0 a conveniently shaped blank adapted to be attached to the walLof the cup for forming a slight lateral projection on the wall of the cup.
In'the form shown the blank 1 for makmg my improved cup, comprises a segment formed of suitable material-having a curved edge 2 and two converging strai t edges 3 and 4 with a projection 5 provided near their proximate ends. The straight edge is substantially radial to the curved edge 2 while the straight edge 4 preferably extends to the edge 2 on a line tangent to the curved edge of the projection 4. The length of the side 2 and the angle inclined between the sides 3 and 4 obviously depends upon the desired diameter and depth of the cup.
In the preferred form the blank 1 is coated upon one side with paraflin or other suitable adhesive water-proof material 6 and m bending the form the coating 6 is arr. t ed at the 2". -1or of the cup so that e coating upon the material cannot under any circumstances become mixed with the contents of the cup or be scraped ofl when using a spoon or other utensil in the cup.
Any suitable material may be employed upon my blank for rendering the same impervious to water or other fluid and also for connecting the overlapping portions of the blank 1 and permanently securing them to gether. In the referred form a suitable mixture of para ti and other material is employed for this purpose and the blank 18 bent to form the cup when the water proofing material is slightly warmed so as to readily adhere when portions of the blank are brought together and thus secure an absolutely tight joint where the edges of the blank overlap and the chilling of material permanentlv attaches the parts together. The several parts are so formed and con- ]Patented Mar. 263, 119118.
stru cted that the material forming the proection 5 wraps around the apex of the cup cially, when slightly warmed. To avoid this difficulty a piece 7 of any suitable material, preferably the same as the cup, is wrapped upon the exterior of the cup to form a pro- 'ection and slightly space the walls of the adjacent cups from each other when so nested. In the preferred construction a disk 7 of suitable size formed of uneoated material similar to that employed for forming the blank 1 is provided and placed in contact with the coated exterior of the cup and extending across the junction of the edges of the blank 1 so as to reinforce this connection and provide an uncoated projection'upon the exterior of the cup adapted to contact with the uncoated interior of the next adjacent cup thus preventing the ossibility of adhesion between them, at the same time preventing the overlapping portions of the blanks from becoming disengaged. It is obvious that the form of the part 7 as Well as the form or construction of the blank for forming my improved cup may be changed as desired from that shown in the drawing and that val'lflus other in ,an Iberia] a cations may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention,
hence I do not wish to be understdodas limtion shown. v
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I. In a'cup, converglng sidewalls adapted to snugly nest with a similar cup, a coat-' ing of waterproof material on one side of said wall and an uncoated proJection upon said side wall adapted to engage the wall of a similar cup and revent the walls of two cups from contacting when the cups are placed one. within the other.
2. In a cup, converging side walls adapted to snugly nest with a similar cup, a coating of waterproof material upon the exterior of said side wall and an uncoated projection upon the outside of said side wall adapted to engage the wall of a similar cup and prevent the walls of two cups from contacting when the cups are placed one within the other.
3. In a cup, convergin side walls comprising a flat paper blan having a liquid proof coating on one side and bent to the desired form and having the edges attached to the body ofsaid blank, said cup being adapted to snugly nest with a similar cup, a flat paper part attached to the side of said cup intermediate its height and-overlapping the edge of said blank thereb forming a projection upon said side wall adapted to engage the wall of a similar cup and prevent the' walls of two cups from contacting when the cups are placed one within the other.
4. In a cup, converging side walls comprising a Hat paper blank bent to the denaoooao sired form and having-the edges attached to the body of said blank adapted to snugly nest with a similar cup, an uncoated projection upon said side wall comprising a piece formed of a material similar to said cup permanently attached thereto at the junctlon of one edge of said blank with the side wall adapted to engage the wall of a similar cup and prevent the walls of two cups from contacting when the cups are placed one within the other.
5. In a cup, converging side walls comprisin a flat paper blank bent to the desired orm and having the edges attached to the body of said blank adapted to snugly nest with a similar cup a coating of adheslve waterproof material on the outside of said wall," an uncoated projection upon the outsideof said side wall comprising a piece formed of a materialsimilar to said cup permanently attached thereto adapted to engage the wall of a similar cup and pre vent the walls of two cups from contacting when the cups are-placed one within the other.
6. As an article of manufacture, a conical cup formed of a plurality of adhering superposed convolutions of a piece of paper coated with waterproof adhesive, such cup having a wrapper with a non-adhesive outer surface secured to the exterior of the apex portion of the cup.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID I CU'R'IIN.
