Application led June 19, 1920. Serial No. $90,063.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH HOLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city 'of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in paper vessels adapted for use as drinki cups,'ice cream dishes, and the like, and has for its object the rovision of an improved construction of this character by means of which a satisfactory vessel of this kind may be provided which is of simple construction, eti'cient in use and capable of economical manufacture.
`@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the'combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be bestv understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and 1n which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank employed in making a vessel embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, a top plan view vof a completed vessel,
Fig. 3, a side view of said vessel shown partially in section,
Fig. 4, a plan view of a blank for making a vessel of different shape,
Fig. 5, atop plan view of said vessel completed, and y Fig.'6, a side view of the same shown partially4 in section.
The form of construction illustrated in tFigs. 1, 2 and 3 consists of a paper blank 7 cut with its upper edge 8 and its lower edge 9 on the arcs of concentric circles. @ne end 10 of said blank is cut substantially parallel to a medial radius of said blank, and the' other end 11 is cut at an acute angle to said' radius, thus formlng said ends at dierent radial angles as shown. The edge 10 makes with the radius running to its outer end (the upper end in Figure 1) a clockwise angle, that isthe edge les on the right side of the radius as one looks from the center vthe arcs 8 and 9 toward the outer end of 1 the same way, the edge 11 makes an angle v, with the radius rainning to its outer end which is also clockwise. Because both of these angles are clockwise, the edges 10 and by glue or other suitable adhesive.
Inv
Fig. 3, said overlapped edgejoeing then secured together by glue or other suitable adhesive. The bottom of the vessel consists of a paper disc 14 inserted in the bottom of the vessel and the tongues 13 are folded inwardly and secured to the bottom of said disc In this way, a strong and durable cup, capable of standing alone is provided.
The modified form of construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, consists of a vessel adapted for use as an ice cream dish and comprises a blank 15 of slightly di'erent shape, said blank being formed with its upper and lower edges'cut on concentric circles of very much smaller radii, thus adapting the blank to the formation of a vessel of shallow conical form as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, and adapted for use as an ice cream dish or the like. The ends 16 and 17 of the -blank 15 are also cut as shown at slightlyl the other side thereof. Otherwise, the construction is substantially the same as that already described.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into eect, these .are capable of variation and modification withlout departing from the spirit of the in vention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth, but desire .to avail myself of such variatlons and modications ascome within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A aper vessel having wallsA made from a blank aving its upper and lower edges c ut substantially on the arcs of concentric ein' cles, and its ends cut at dierent radiai an v gles, said blank being bent into conical form seam; and a bottom member consisting of a disc secured to the lower edges of said walls.
2. A paper vessel having walls made from a blank having its upper and lower edges cut substantially on the arcs of concentric circles, and its ends cut at different radial angles, said lblank being bent into conical form with its ends overlapped to form an inclined seam; and a bottom member consisting of a disc inserted in the lower end of said vessel, the lower edges of said walls being folded under and secured to the bottom -of said disc.
3. A paper vessel having walls made froma blank having its upper and lower edges cut substantially on the arcs of concentric cir-` cles, and its ends cut at different radial angles, said blank being bent into conical form with its ends overlappedto form an inclined seam; and a bottom member consisting of a disc inserted in the lower end of said vessel, the lower edges of said walls being slitted to form tongues, and said tongues being foldedl iinwardly and secured to the bottom of said isc.
4; A paper Vessel having walls made up of 'a blank having its upper and lower edges cut substantially on the arcs of concentric circles, and one of its ends cut substantially parallel with a medial radius, the other end being cut at an acute angle to said radius, said blank being bent int-o conical form with its ends overlapped to form an inclined seam; d a bottom member consisting of a disc inserted into the lower end of saidl vessel, the lower edges of said walls being slitted to form tongues, and said tongues being bent inwardly and secured to the bottom of said disc.
5. A blank for paper cups including a strip of material Ahaving two of its ed es in the form of circular arcs with one o said edges slotted to form tongues, and with its ends cut at different radial angles.
6. A blank for paper cups including a strip of material having two of'its edges in the form of concentric circular arcs with one 'of said edges slotted to form tongues, atid with 'its ends cut at diiierent radial ang es.
7. A blank for paper cups including a strip of material having twoof its ed es in the form of circular arcs with one o said ed es slotted to form tongues, and with one of lts ends cut substantially parallel with the medial radius of the circles, the other end being cut at an acute angle to said radius.
8. A cup formed from sheet material and having' a conical wall with a seam oblique to the elements of the cone.
9. A cup formed from sheet material and 'having a conical wall with a seam of uniform width, the edges of said material along said seam being at an angle to tlie elements of the cone. y
10. A blank for forming a conical vessel, said blank having two edges in the form of arcs of concentric circles and two edges intermediate the first-named edges, one of said intermediate edges making an angle with the radius to its outer end and the other of said intermediate edges making an angle with the radius to its outer end, the said angles being Aalike and in the same direction whereby when said blank is formed into the frusturn of a cone with said intermediate edges forming a seam, the seam will be at an angle to the elements of the cone.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUDOLPH HOLMAN.
