HELMET FOB COMBATANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed July 6, 1917. Serial No. 179,012.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEANNE TATY, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of Paris, France, 17 Rue Tronchet, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Helmets for Combatants, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention relates to a helmet for combatants, designed so that it can be placed, without modification on the head in two positions, owing to the arrangement of a vizor comprising an enlarged perforated part, the said helmet protecting in one of its positions (fighting position) the eyes and an important part of the face, while in the other position (position of rest) it protects the neck from the rain and sun, the face and the eyes being then completely exposed.
In both positions, circulation of air around the face takes place in good conditions.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a helmet according to the invention;
F i 2 is a front elevation of the helmet placed in one of the positions (fighting),
Fig. 3 a front elevation of the helmet placed in the other position (rest) and Figs. 4 and 5 show the helmet in two positions of different inclination on the head of a combatant.
In the said drawings, a is the viZor comprising an enlarged part 5 provided with perforations c which may be of any desired shape and number, provided however that the vision is not interfered with, and that the perforated metal retains sufficient strength to protect the eyes from splinters and projectiles of any kind. I
In order to place the helmet in the two positions above referred to, it could be either reversed, so that the perforated part which in the fighting position is placed in front of the eyes (Fig. 2) should be brought into the position of rest, behind the neck (Fig. 3), or given different inclinations so that in the lowered position which is the fighting one (Fig. 4) it should protect the eyes and an important part of the face, and in the raised position which is that of rest (Fig. 5), it should uncover the eyes and protect the neck. To facilitate bringing the helmet into the latter position, the rear part d of the vizor could be slightly shortened as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. To bring the helmet from one into the other position, the two means above referred to, could be combined.
This construction of helmet makes it possible to avoid the necessity for the combatant to wear separate goggles, and at the same time protects during the fight the eyes, the temples, the ears and the nose, and makes possible the use of a gas mask. It makes it possible moreover to uncover at rest the face and the vision of the combatant, while protecting the neck from the rain and the sun.
Claims:
1. A helmet for combatants comprising a crown resting on the head and a brim rigid therewith, said brim having a rear portion adapted to form a rain shed for the neck, and an enlarged front portion extending in front of the eyes substantially at right angles to the line of vision and perforated to permit vision therethrough.
2. A helmet for combatants comprising a crown resting on the head and a brim rigid therewith, said brim having a rear portion adapted to form a rain shed for the neck and an enlarged front portion covering the temples and extending in front of the eyes, substantially at right angles to the direct line of vision and being perforated to permit vision therethrough.
3. A helmet for combatants comprising a crown resting on the head and a brim rigid therewith, said brim having a rear portion adapted to form a rain shed for the neck and an enlarged front portion merging therewith and covering the temples and extending in front of the eyes and apertured to permit vision therethrough.
l. A helmet for combatants comprising a crown resting on the head and a brim rigid therewith, said brim having a rear portion adapted to form a rain shed for the neck and an enlarged front portion merging therewith and covering the temples and extending in front of the eyes and apertured to permit vision therethrough, said helmet having its crown portion shaped to fit the head in reversed positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEANNE TATY.
