Description
y `To all whom t may concern `Be it known that ILSAMUEE of North Providence, in the county oProvl- KNIGHT,
dence `and State of RhodeIsland, have in l vented a new and useful Improvement in the *Chalkingof Lines; and I hereby declare y the following to 'be a full and true description thereof,`reference being had to the drawings herewith presented, `which vdrawings `constitute a part ofsaiddescription.
\ The principle of my invention consistsin using a vessel of pulverized chalk or :other substance through whichthe line is drawn in order to saturate theline with chalkand at time, and waste of material. `Fo-r this purpose I constructa roll `or spool (of sheet metal or othersuitable substance) whose bart `rel is hollowed out suiliciently to contain the chalk-cylinder (C).` See the drawing.
i Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine complete `having the cylinder C inclosed. Fig. 2 is a `longitudinal section of the'same showing the line (W.) as it passes through the heads of the chalk-cylinder C and through the leathers (L and L Fig.
3 is a section of the cylinder taken out of the A y barrel.
` Similar letters denote the same parts in `the several figures.
` The leather packing is secured to thelhead .by the clasp seen at (ma). the heads are secured in the cylinder bythe small hooks UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
i "METHOD OF CHALKING LINES.
Specification of Letters lEiatentNo. 12,599, dated March 27, l1855.
seen at (1* r.) attached on the inside of the head (T.) and by passing them down through two notches in the rim (w.) seen at Fig. 6 (and which is soldered on the inside of the cylinder) and then turning them a quarter round locks the head by bringing the hooks under the opposite sides of the rim.
Fig.f is an oblique view of the head (T.) turned up in order to show the hooks (r, 13) Fig. 4 is a top view of the head of the roll (H.) showing the valve (V.) attached to the head by its hinge (i.) and secured by the button i When I use the instrument I first fill the cylinder at (C.) with line chalk and pass the line 4(W.) through both heads and the leathers shown by the dotted spaces L and L seen at Fig. 3. When theline is not in use it may be Wound upon the roll in the usual way and the cylinder is placed in the barrel for thesake of compact stowage and the line remains in the cylinder ready for instant use. What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The above described method of chalking a line by drawing it through the cylinder or other vessel containing the fine chalk and also through the rubber of leather or other compressible substance for the purpose and in manner substantiallyV as set forth, and this I claim when used for chalk or other coloring material. y
/In testimony whereofI have to subscribe my name in presence of two witnesses.
