Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
R. G. ALLERTON, OE NEV YORK, N. Y.
BLOTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,477', dated June 9, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN G. ALLERTON, of the city and State of New York, have invented a. new and useful blotter, consisting of a segment of a cylinder having the conveX surface covered with the blotting-paper or other blotting material and having a handle in the fiat side and to be used by a single rocking motion7 and of Which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the drawing hereto anneXed.
In the drawing A is the stock of the `apparatus which may be made of mahogany or of any other suitable material. This stock as shown by thc drawing has one side convex and the other side flat. It Will be, of sufficient size for ordinary use, if it be about six inches long, and of such thickness that a circle drawn in conformity with the conveX surface Would be three inches in diameter.
B is the handle which is inserted into the flat side of the stock.
C is the blotting paper or other suitable blotting substance and which covers the convex surface. A groove is cut into the stock and D is an india rubber or other elastic band placed around the stock into the groove and holding under it the upper edge of the blotting material and Which keeps the blotting material snug onto the convex surface.
Other modes of attaching the blotting material may be substituted but by the use of an elastic band for this purpose the blotting material can be easily put upon and removed from the stopk as it becomes soiled and requires replenishing. The best Way in practice is to place several layers of the blotting material onto the stock under the band D and then as often as the outer layer becomes so saturated with ink as to become unfit Jfor further use remove it, by simply R. G. ALLERTON.
