FREDERICK IV. BROCKSIEPER, OF NEW HAVEN,CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SARGENT & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,879, dated April 93, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. BRooK- SIEPER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Sash-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view Fig. 2, a transverse central section of the case, showing a side view of the lever; and in Fig. 3 an under-side view of the fastener.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of sash-fasteners or buttons which are applied to'the meeting-rails, the fastener being secured to the bottom rail of the upper sash, and the lever turned onto a keeper on the top rail of the lower sash.
The object of this invention is to produce a cheap fastener, and one not liable to get out of order; and it consists in the construction of the case so as to form a bearing for the lever upon the upper side, and with a longitudinal spring centrally or nearly so beneath the lever, which yields for the turning of the lever, and yet holds it sufficient-ly in the two required positions, as more fully hereinafter described.
A is the plate or base, from which the case B rises, the central portion of the case at the top extending forward, as at C, the front of the case being open, and an opening through the plate, as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, whereby the plate and case may be cast in one and the same piece. D is the lever, in general form substantially the same as in common sashfasteners. This I construct with a trunnion,
a, upon its upper side, and the top portion C of the case'with a corresponding recess to form a seat or hearing for the said trunnion, so that on the said bearing the lever may be freely turned to the right or left. It will be evident that the trunnion may be formed upon the case, and the seat in the lever, if preferred. To support the lever in its bearing I place a spring, (I, longitudinally across the plate A, in a line central, or nearly so, with the center of motion of the lever, and form a notch, d, in the under side of the lever, into which the said spring will set when the lever is turned to the extreme right or left, or in the central position, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The ends of the spring are supported on the plate, as denoted in Fig. 1. As a further support for the lever I make the hack of the case open, and form an extension, 12, upon the lever to set into this opening, as seen in Fig. 2.
By this construction the case and lever may both be cast complete, and require little if any labor other than the tumbling to prepare for their being set together, and, after they are so set together, the spring inserted secures them in position, and an extremely cheap and durable fastener is produced.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, the sash-fastener, consisting of the case A B C cast in a single piece, and the lever D journaled in the under part of C, and held in place by the spring at bearing upon its under side, with or without the projection b on the lever and corresponding recess in the case, all as described and shown, for the purpose set forth. a
F. WV. BROCKSIEPER.
