7 '0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, TINT CIIAMPLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Valley, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Knives and Wrenches, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates ingeneral to compound tools and in particular to knives having a plurality of pivotally mounted blades of peculiar construction, the blades being capable of performing functions in addition to the usual cutting functions and a wrench rigidly secured to the knife handle.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a compound tool capable of performing a multiplicity of functions, the elements being so constructed and arrangect that they occupy and operate within a comparatively small space. A secondary object of my invention is to provide a wrench, the jaws of which can be quicklyand easily moved to various positions, the wrench requiring for its operation a minimumrand substantially uniform degree of physical energy. Other objects of my invention will hereafter be pointed out or will otherwise appear in connection with the following description of an embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my combined knife and wrench; Fig. 2 is an elevation of my knife with one of the side scales removed to expose the structural'elemcnts of the wrench; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fi 2; Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 2 on the line 4-4., and Fig. 5 is a section of Fi 2 on the line 5-5.
Referring to the drawings the fixed mem ber 5 of my wrench forms the back rib of the knife. This fixed member 5 has formed at one end a stop lug 6 to which are secured the blades to be described, and at the other end, the serrated wrench jaw 7. A rack 8 comprising a plurality of teeth is formed in the back rib 5. A yoke 9 is secured to the said back rib 5 by means of the rivet or equimilent means 10. Back springs 12 form filling pieces between the back rib and the scales, are secured in place by means of the rivet 13, or equivalent means, and abut against the lower edges of the yoke 9. V A resilient. spring guide member 14' is integrally a part of each back spring 12. To said back springs 12 are secured the usual scales 24; and 2, which are held inplace by the rivets l0 and 13 and the usual blade pivot 22. A slidable wrench member 1511215 formed at one end a serrated jaw 16 and has extend ing from its other end a corrugated lug 17.

The slidable wrench member 15 is guided by the yoke 9 and the spring guide members 14:. The lower edge of the slidable wrench member is cleared away for a short distance 18 from its outer end so as to provide a fulcrum it) on which the member fulcrums. At the other end of the wrench member is formed a toe piece 20, adapted to engage the teeth of the rack 8, and held in resilient engagement therewith by the spring 11. The upper face of the wrench member 15 is indicated by 21, and is so formed that when the member 15 is tilted to disengage the toe piece 20 from the rack 8, the said upper surface is approximately flush with the upper edge of the knife body proper. A blade 24 of the knife has the usual cutting edge 25 and is so formed at the end 26 that the blade is adapted for use as a screw driver. Another blade of the. knife is indicated at 27 and has a curved rib 28 running along the back thereof, and has the usual cutting edge 29.
In using this device the slidable wrench member 15 is moved toward the jaw 7 by pressing on the thumb plate 17 until both jaws engage the object which it is desired to rotate, such as, for instance, a nut. WVhen it is desired to open the jaws a downward pressure is applied to the finger piece 17, thus disengaging toe piece 20 from the rack 8. The slidable member 15 may then be moved so that the jaw 16 is moved away from the jaw 7. It is to be noted that by having a single toe piece on the movable member engaging a rack on the fixed member a uniform pressure disengages the toe piece at all positions thereof from the rack; if a plurality of teeth were substituted for the single pawl shown in the construction,'
not only a longer movable member would be required but also a larger casing for the knife would be required in order to provide clearance for the swinging of the member 15. The construction exemplified, there fore, permits not only a reduction in the size of the elements, but also permits a reductiouin the size of the casing of the knife,
producing an inexpensive and conveniently operated article. WVhen it is desired to use the wrench for piping the movable member 15 is capable of swinging toward the yoke 9 so that the jaw 16, due to its angular inclination relative to j aw 7 readily engage the pipe.
Various changes in detail may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim 1. In combination with a wrench casing having a back rib terminating in a jaw, the other end of the rib within the casing hav ing a rack, a tapered member slidable upon said rib and having one end provided with a jaw adapted to coope ate with the rib jaw and a toe piece at the other end adapted to engage the rack, the Width of said slidable member at the region of the toe piece being less than the distance from the apex of the rack teeth to the top edge of the casing so that said slidable member does not project beyond said casing when operated, the end region of the slidable member being cleared nesaeee away from the rib so to provide a fulcrum so that pressure upon said end will disengage the toe piece from the rack.
2. In combination with a wrench casing having a back rib extending beyond the casing and terminating-in a jaw, the other end of the rib within the casing having a rack, a tapered member slidable upon said rib and having one end provided with a jaw adapted to coope ate with the rib jaw and a toe piece at the other end adapted to engage the rack, the width of said slidable member at the region of the toe piece being less than the distance from the apex of the rack teeth to the top edge of the casing so that said slidabie member does not project beyond said casing when operated, the end region of the slidable member being cleared away from the rib so as to provide a fulcrum so that pressure upon said. end will disengage the toe piece from the rack and a spring bearing on said slidable member.
