To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Srnnonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand punches of the character described in United States Reissue Letters Patent No. 13,313 and in my copending application filed April 12, 1923, Serial No. 631,495. In punches of this type it is desired to normally maintain the operating lever in cooperative relation to the punch-operating part, {and to swing said lever out of such relation when rcmoving the punch or cutting element.
It is the object of the present invention to improve this type of punches by the provision of simple and novel means for positively holding said operating lever in said co-operative relation or normal working position so that the lever can not be displaced therefrom, except by a positive act-oi the operater enabled by simply removing a threaded stop member which permits such. displacement 01": the lever as to allow the punch elements to be easily withdrawn for sharpening or the substitution of a new punch.
I have also aimed to so arrange this stop member as not to weaken any of the punch parts, and at the same time to provide construction whichis practical and durable for all purposes for which a punch of this kind is intended, and which may-bemanufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Another object is to provide in a punch construction of the character described, a lever stop which so limits the opening movement of the lever when the punch is fully retracted, that the lever does not interfere with a perpendicular wall, as when using the punch directly against such wall in the manufacture of tanks and in similar situations.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, it will be observed that the punch comprises a head designated generally by reference character 5 having formed integrally therewith an upper and a lower jaw 6 and 7 respectively, and a handle 8. The lower aw carries an anvil 9 and the upper aw a cutting or punch element 11. The punch ele ment slidable in the upper jaw toward and from the anvil, is adapted to be moved in a pressure or punching stroke and in a return or retracting stroke through the agency of a punch-moving part 12 and an operating lever 13. The part 12 pivoted at 14-. on the head 5 has a T-shaped recess or slot 15 in its outer end adapted to receive the T-head 16 of the punch element. The punch element is thus detachably connected to the part 12 and the latter part may be swung in a clockwise direction on its fulcrum, viewing Fig. 3, to withdraw the punch from the upper jaw 6. The operating lever 13 is interposed between a pair of side plates 17 and 18 and fulcrumed thereon by means of a bolt 19 which also serves to hold said side": plates together. Said side plates in turn straddle the upper jaw 6 and are "fulcrumed and pivotally attached thereto by'nieans of a bolt 21. On the outer end of the punch-moving part there is provided an upstanding projection 22 circular .in cross-section. which fits into a complemental recess 23 in the operating lever, whereby upon swinging said lever downwardly, powerful pressure may be transmitted to the part 12 and consequently to the punch element, and upon raising said lever the punch element will be retracted. A suitable flat spring 24 is employed for aiding in retracting the punch element.
The foregoing parts except as to their shape, proportions and particular relative relation are substantially disclosed in the prior art above mentioned. In the present invention I have aimed to so arrange the parts that when the punch element is fully withdrawn from the month between the jaws 6 and '7, the operating lever 13 will not interfere with a perpendicular wall indicated in Fig. 2 by the dotted line 20 against which the punch may be positioned for working in close relation to said wall. And I have further aimed to provide a simple and practical means for holding the side plates 17 and 18, and consequently the operating lever 13, in co-operative relation to the punch-moving part, and to permit quick and easy displacement of these parts as shown in Fig. 3 for removal of the punch element. To this end, I have shaped the handle 8, lever 13 and intermediate part so that said lever does not swing beyond substantially the position shown in Fig. 2, when the punch element is fully retracted, and I have provided a stop member 25 threadingly engaged in one side of the upper jaw and passing through an arcuate slot 26 in the side plate 18. Said stop member has a knurled head 27 adapted to be turned for tightening its inner shoulder 28 against the outer face of the head 5, there by rigidly securing said stop member in position without binding the side plates.
In the operation of this tool the side plates swing on the bolts 21 when the lever 13 is operated, and this swinging movement in the opening operationis limited by contact of the lower end of the slot 26 against the stop member 25, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus, while the stop member 25 is in place the co-related punch operating parts cannot be displaced from their operative rela tion. When it is desired to remove the punch element the stop member 25 will first be removed, thereby permitting the parts to be swung to an inoperative position, such as shown in Fig. 3, in which the punch element is readily removable from the part 12. This makes a very simple and durable construction for the purposes in mind. It also enables the workman to quickly and easily change the punch or cut ting element and prevents displacement of the operating lever from co-operative relation to the punch-moving part when the punch is in use.
It is believed that the foregoing conveys a clear understanding of my invention, and
while I have illustrated but a single working embodiment, it should be understood that changes might be made in details of construction without departing from the spirit and. scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims, in which I claim:
1. A' punch of the character described comprising a head having ahandle and a punch-carrying part, a punch element slidable in said part, a punch-moving part pivoted on the head and adapted to be swung on its pivot into and out of an operative position to withdraw the punch element from the head when swung to its inoperapart and is adapted to impart pressure to the punch .element, and in-the latter it permits swinging of said punch-moving part to its inoperative position, said means having a slot opening, and a stop member connected to the head and passing through said opening for normally holding said means and the operating lever in the said operative relation and being removable from said slot opening for permitting said lever and said means to be moved to said inoperative relation;
a 2; A punch of the character described comprising a head having a punch-carrying part, a punch or cutting element slidable in said part, a punch-moving part mounted on said head and adapted to be moved from an operative to an inoperative position whereby to permit removal of the punch element when inthe inoperative position, a side plate at each side of said head 'pivotally mounted thereon, an operating lever interposed between and pivotally mounted on said side plates and adapted for imparting punching pressure to the punch-moving part when in operative relation thereto'andbe swungout of such relation to permit said removal of the punch element, the side plates having an arcuate opening therethrough, and a 'stop member passing through said opening fand being threadingly secured to the head for preventing opening movement of the operating lever beyond a predetermined point and removable from the head for permitting said lever to be. swung beyond said point out of said operative relation to the punch-moving part. a 2 V 3. A punch as set forth in claim 2, in which the head is shaped to provide in-. tegral upper and lower aws between which the material to be punched is adapted to be punch, said sideplates straddling the upper jaw and being pivotally. mounted thereon, and said stop member being threaded into said upper jaw.
