Description

lnted gister ic/latent 'dt-mitre.
Letters Patent No. 96,156, dated October 26, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making palrt of thesame..
The drawing represents a side view, partly in 'sec tion, of my improved saw-set.
This invention relates to a new implement for set# ting all kinds of saws. It can be applied without removing the saw from the mandrel, and will set the teeth very accurately and evenly.
The invention'consists in the general arrangement of cam-levers, fixed and movable jaws, sliding punch, and` gauge-piece, all combined as hereinafter more fully described.
A, in the drawing,'represents the handle of my improved saw-set.v
The handle is fastened to the lower end of a shank,
`or bar, B, which carries near its upper end a head, C,
ythat projects from both sides of the shank, as shown.
To vthe upper end of the shank B is pivoted, by a pin, a, a lever D, projecting, also, from both sides, as
shown. I e E is a movable jaw, arranged to slide on the shank B, under the head, or xed jaw 0.
It is adjusted by a screw, b, and nut c, or by other equivalent means similar to the manner of working the jaw of a monkey-wrench.
The jaw E is notched on its upper face.
F is a punch, held by a spring, G, on the head C,
and fitting through an aperture of said head, as shown.V
The spring tends to hold it up against thev lever D.
Its lower end is above the notch on the jaw E.
H is a lever, pivoted to that end of the jaw C through which the punch is not fitted. This lever hasa camshaped upper end, working under the lever D. By moving the lower end of the lever H toward lthe han-y dle, the cam will raise the contiguous end ofthe lever D, thereby forcing down the punch.
A saw-tooth placed over the notch of thevjaw E will thereby be set.
For diiierent kinds of saws, different notched jaws should be used. To avoid this, I provide plates I I,
of different kinds, adapted to the various styles of saw-teeth, and place oneof the same upon the jaw E, as shown, so lthat the saw will be set on such plate I.
The degree of set is regulated by a set-screw, d,
fitted through the lever H, or Shank, to arrest the lever at a suitable distance from the shank. HavingV thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A saw'-set, consisting of the shank B, fixed jaw C, movable jaw E, levers D H, and punch F, all combined and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The notched plates I, arranged in combination with the movable jaws E and punch F of a saw-set, substantially as herein shown and described.
