JOHN H. HOLMES, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIU.
MECHANICAL FLAG-WAVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2%, 1191i Application filed September 21, 1917. Serial No. 192,519.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. HoLMns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and use-- ful Improvements in Mechanical Flag- IVavers, of which the following a specification.
T his invention is an improved mechanism for use on the radiator cap of an automobile and embodying a figure having an arm mounted for rocking movement and to carry a flag and also embodying a wind-wheel and a train. of gears driven by the wind-wheel and connected to the arm to cause the arm to move and wave the flag when the automobile is in motion, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is simple in construction and which is compact and in which the train of gears is entirely protected and not exposed.
The invention consists inthe construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a front elevation of a manikin flag waver constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a manikin or figure 1 which is here shown as a statuette, Liberty, and the body of which is hollow, providing a chamher 2. The figure has a base 3 to be attached to the radiator cap of an automobile and the figure also has a movable arm or arm member 4: which is carried by a shaft 5, the said shaft being mounted for rocking movement in bearings in the figure, extending through the figure and being provided with a crank 6.
I also provide a wind-wheel 7 which. is secured to the front end of a shaft 8, the said shaft passing through the body and be ing mounted in hearings in the front and rear sides thereof. Said shaft has a pinion 9 which engages a spur gear 10 on a second shaft 11, said second shaft having-a pinion 12 which engages a spur gear 13 on a third shaft 14, which. third shaft as well as the second shaft is arranged in thechamber in the manikin or figure. The third shaft is also provided with a crank 15 which is connected by a pitman 17 to the crank of the shaft 5. T he movable arm member 41 carries a flag l6 and when the automobile is in motion the wind-wheel is revolved and through the train of gears and the cranks and pitman imparts rocking motion to the shaft 5 so that the arm member 4: mechanically waves the fiag 16 as will be understood.
The figure is also provided at opposite sides near the base with sockets for the reception of the staffs of flags 18. i
It will be observed that all the mechanism for driving a flag waving arm excepting the wind-wheel is arranged and housed in the body of the figure so that the mechanism is thoroughly protected and is not exposed. The device is extremely compact and can be readily manufactured at slight cost and is not likely to get out of order.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construe tion of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and. within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a device of the class described, a manikin figure having a hollow body and also having a flag carrying arm member mounted for rocking movement, a wind-wheel, and mechanism driven by the wind'wheel and for imparting rocking movement to said arm, said mechanism being arranged and housed in the hollow body of the manikin figure.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN H. HOLMES.
Eoplea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by addressing the Commissioner of Eatenta.
