Be it known that I, ALEXANDER N. SGHAN- soHIEr-r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Guns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, the objects being to provide a toy to simulate an armored automobile, including a miniature gun, special means being provided to cause powder to belch from the gun to simulate puffs of smoke, and also to produce a sound, to simulate a report, simultaneously with the puffs of the smoke.
The special object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive device of this character, which is durable enough to withstand ordinary usage and which, by simple mechanism, accomplishes the objects above described. Further details of improvement and advantages iowing therefrom, will hereinafter appear. v
In thel drawing which accompanies this specication Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of an embodiment of my improvement;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof; and` Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. As herein embodied, the device consists of a suitable box-like structure 4 upon which is pivotally mounted a turret 5 provided with a miniature gun 6. The turret 5 is in the form of an inverted cup having a removable cover 7 to the inside of which is secured a bellows 8 adapted to receive powder, such as talcum or powdered chalk, through an opening 9 normally closed by a cork or stopper 10. The bellows 8 is connected to the gun 6 by a iiexible hose 11. The turret 5 is pivotally secured to the top 12 ofthe box or support 4 by a tubular bushing 13 having a iiange 14 which overlaps'the bottom 15 of the turret 5. The bushing 14 will be suitably fastened to the support 4.
To produce puffs of smoke, the bellows 8 will be operated to alternately slightly collapse and expand, which action will cause the powder therein to issue from the nozzle of the gun, a little at a time in the form of puffs. To operate the bellows, I employ a spring-motor 16. The motor 16 operates a shaft 17 having a crank-arm 17a to engage yieldable resilient arms 18 and 19. The arm 19 carries 'an upstanding post 2O which passes through bushing 14 and contacts with the bellows 8. One end of arm 18 is secured to the frame 21 at22. The frame 21 sup ports the motor 16. It will be seen in Fig. 2 that the frame 21 carries the motor and arms 18 and 19 and is inserted into the boX- like support 4 and is secured thereto by ears 23 and nails or screws 24. By this means I am able to assemble the motor and arms 18 and 1 9, after which the frame can be inserted into place. The rotation of shaft 17 will cause the crank-arm 17 to force the arm 18 downwardly during each revolution of the shaft 17 As soon as the crank-arm clears the projection 25 on the arm 18, it will snap upwardly and cause the post 20 to snap against the bellows 8. The snap action of the post'will cause powder to Vbe forced from the gun in the form of short puifs, instead of a drawn out line of smoke.
Adjacent the arm 18, I place the arm 19 having an extension 26 similar to the extension 25 of arin 18. The arm 19 is further provided with a raised portion orv teat 27 to contact with vwall 12 of the support- 4.
The action imparted to arm 19 will be the i' which contacts with projection 26 on said armk 19. The gun 6 and bellows 8 are con,- nected for separation by means of theviiexible tube 11. The device, while simple,A is
arranged for ready disassemblage in case repair is needed.
The gun 5 can be moved in a circle by moving the turret upon its pivot 13:
The support is provided with rear wheels 27 and a front steerable wheel 28.
The motor 16 consists of a spindle 29 surrounded by a spring 30. One end of said spring is connected to a ratchet 31, having in engagement therewith a pawl 32, said ratchetbeing carried by the spindle 29. The other end of the spring is connected to a gear 33 meshing with a pinion 34 on shaft 35. Shaft 35 also carries, adjacent the opposite end, a gear 36 meshing with a pinion 37 on crank-shaft 17. Shafts 35 and 17 carry balance wheels 38 and 39 and 40, re-
spectively, in the form of intermeshing gears. The spindle 29 is rotated to wind up the spring 30 by means of a handle 41.
To maintain the arms 18 and 19 in proper position to hold the extensions 25 and 26 in the path of rotation of the crank-arm 17, I
provide a bracket 42 on the frame 21. The
bracket 42 is provided with an opening 43 through which the end members 44 and 45 of the arms 18 and 19 pass.
What I claim as my invention is:`
1. In a toy, a support, a gun mounted thereon, a bellows connected therewith to retain powder, a motor mechanism, a yieldable resilient arm operated by the motor, and means associated with the arm to contact with said bellows to operate same to force powder therefrom.
2. In a toy, a support, a gun mounted thereon, a bellows connected therewith to retain powder, a motor mechanism, a shaft operated by the motor, a yieldable resilient arm, a projection carried thereby, means carried by lthe shaft to contact with said projection and depress said arm during the rotation of said shaft, and a post carried by the arm toV contact with said bellows to operate same to force powder therefrom.
3. The combination of a toy-gun, a bellows associated therewithto retain powder, a exible hose connecting the bellows and gun, and means to operate the bellows.
4. In a toy, a support, a gun carried thereby, a bellows arranged to retain powder connected therewith, a yie-ldable resilient arm, a post carried thereby, and integral therewith arranged to Contact with said bellows, a crank, means to operate the crank, and meanscarriedby the arm positioned to be engaged by said crank.
5. The combination of a toy-gun, a bellows connected therewith, and arranged to contain powder, and means to be snapped against said bellows to Aforce powder therefrom into and through said gun. j n

The combination of a support, a gun carried thereby, a bellows to contain powder connected therewith, a resilient arm, a post carried by the arm and integral therewith to contact with said bellows, said arm and post being 'formed out of a single strip of resilient wire connected atone end with said support, a second arm adjacent the arm iirst named, consisting of a single strip oi resilient wire connected at one end to said support, said second arm having a teatintermediate its ends to contact with said support, a projection carried by each arm at its free end, a crank to releasably engage said projections to-operate said arms, and means to actuate the crank.-
8.- The combination of a support, a gun carried thereby, a bellows to contain powder connected therewith, a resilient arm, a post carried by the arm and integral therewith to contact with said bellows, said arm and post being formed out of a single strip of resilient wire connected at one end with said support, a second arm adjacent the arm irst named, consisting of a single strip of resilientwire connected at one end to said support, said second arm having a teat intermediate its ends to contact with said support, a projection carried by each arm at its free end, a crank to releasably engage said projections to operate said arms, means to actuate the crank, and a guide for the free ends of the arms to maintain the projections in the path of rotation of said crank.
