Description

L DEMUTH TOBACCO PIPE.
APPLICATION men )ULY 30.1911.
Patented Feb. 26, 1918.
whichthe following irnsra LEOPOLD DEMUTH. OF NEW YGBK, N. Y.
TOBAGGO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I. Lnoronb 'Dn njn'ru, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of
1s a SPGClfiCfl-UOEL This invention relates to a. tobacco pipe I in which the mouth piece is connected to the to engage a threaded socket formed in the to the parts.
stem of the bowl by a screw nipple made stem. c
The present invention is an improvement on'my Patent No. 1,153,771, granted Sept. 14th, 1915, in which the threaded nipple forms an integral part The l11VI1tlOIr1S desi ned to )rovide a nipple of durable construction with a short coarse thread at its front'portion to engage a' corresponding thread formed in the bot tom of the socket to glve air-tlght closure The object of the invention is to provide a nipple which can be readily disconnected from'the mouth piece when broken and another substituted. This is an important item in a pipe with an expensive mouth piece such as amber or other pellucid substance, where if the nipple was broken it required expensiverepairs; or if of ordinary inexpensive material the mouth piece would have to be discarded.
' The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of a pipe embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar. view showing the mouth piece detached.
.Fig. 3 is a view on a larger scale of a nipple.
In this drawing the letter a designates a bowl having a receptacle for holding tobacco. A stem 6 projects from the bowl and it has a channel 0 extending from the bottom of the receptacle. In the end of the stem is located a socket d having part of its depth threaded as indicated at e. The convolutions begin at the bottom of the socket and run a short distance, the major part of the socket being unthreaded.
A mouth piece or stem 7 is preferably made of horn, amber, bakelite, or hard rubber. The inner end'of this month piece is provided with a threaded socket or bore 9 made Specification of Letters Patent.
of the mouth piece.

Application filed July 30, 1917'. Serial No. 183,498.
to engage the threaded forward portion 7a. of-a nipple. The nipple is preferably made of bone and it includes a projecting member 2'. having a. short coarse thread j to correspond with the thread in the stem socket. The thread begins at the front end of the nipple and extends about one-third its length. In the nipple and the mouth piece is'locatcd a channel it which when the nipple is screwed into the socket of the stem will register with the channel in the stem.
The screw stem 71, has fine threads and is slightly smaller in diameter than the projecting member 2' so as to insure a strong device at the base of its junction with the mouth piece. The coarse square screw threads of the nipple with its short convolutions will not be liable to overturn and consequently bring the mouth piece'out of register or line with the bowl. By reason of the short thread the mouthpiece will draw up tight against the stem obviating any leakage of air .or liquid between the joints. The nipple being of comparatively large diameter will not split or break and the nicotin will have less effect on the coarse screw of the kind described. The parts can be easily kept in a hygienic condition by the accessibility of the screw thread for clean ing purposes. The large coarse screw also permits uniform accurate tapping or cutting thus giving perfect register and snug fit to the parts when screwed together.
By having the nipple threaded into the socket in the stem it can be readily unscrewed when desired or when broken by anyone unskilled in the art and then interchanged.
I claim 1. A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl having a stem with a partly threaded socket, a detachable mouth piece, a nipple removably carried by the mouth piece, said nipple including a partly threaded portion at its front end for insertion into the partly threaded socket in the stem.
2. A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl having a stem with a partly threaded socket, a detachable mouth piece provided with a socket, a nipple made to engage the latter socket, said nipple including a partly threaded portion at its front end for insertion into the partly threaded socket in the stem.
3. A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl hav-' ing a stem with a socket threaded a portion flush with the diameter of the unthreaded part, a detachable mouth piece provided with a threaded socket a nipple having corresponding threads to engage the latter socket, said nipple having a portion of its length threaded to engage the socket in the stem.
4. A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl having a stem with a socket threaded a portion of its depth at the bottom, a detachable mouth piece provided with a finely threaded socket, a v nipple having corresponding threads to engage the latter socket, said nipple having a portion of its length beginning at its front end coarsely threaded to engage the socket in the stem.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
