APPLIACATION FILED 1AN.'3,|916.

UNITED sTATEs iairuiviA OFFICE.
n ULYssEsG. ivic'QUEEiv, or NEW'VYORK, N. v.-
HINGE.
Y To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ULYssEsG. McQnEN,
y citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the'county of New York and State of N ew` York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Hinges, `of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to easement hinges and particularly'to a hinge designedfor use consist of leaves 1 and 2, the former having merals `indicate similar upon easements Awhich are intended to `be` moved yvertically in the frame. An object of the invention resides in the provision of a hinge structure including companion leaves and an attaching plate,V
one of said leavesbeing secured to the frame and the attaching plate being associated with the other leaf and secured to the sash or casement whereby the latter may be freelyV moved in a vertical direction, and in assembling the mentioned parts, I have endeavored toreduce friction between the attaching plate and the next "adjacent hinge leaf so as to insure free movement of the sash from the hinge.
A further object of the invention resides in the construction of a hinge which may be readily applied to they frame and its casement or sash; one which will be simple, strong and durable, and one which will include avlifting mechanism, and means for nicelyV and compactly concealing the same..
In the drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like reference nuparts throughout the several views; Y
Figure 1, is a front elevation of the combined hinge and lift.
Fig. 2, is a section taken on the line -ct of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a section ta'ken on the line 6 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, is a rear elevation of the combined hinge and lift. f
Fig. 5, is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 6, is a horizontal sectionv through a portion-of a easement and its supporting frame'showing the application of the combined hinge and easement lift thereto. s
Fig. 7, is a perspective view of thecam.
The combined hinge and easement lift loops or knuckles 3-3 which are alined with similar loops or knuckles 41-4-1 upon the leaf 2. Extending through all of these loops or knucklesis a pintle 5 having fixed knobs Specification of Letters` Patent. i i, Patented 3,11, 1918, applicati@ 'med January s, 1916. seriaiNo. 70,0714. l y
6 -6 rwhereby to hold the leaves against lon- .gitudinal movement.'
The leaf 2 is provided with a series of guidestuds 7 which are preferablyarranged in zig-zag fashion relatively, as shown in Fig. 41 These studs have slianks 8 which ex'- tend through the restricted and vertically lelongated branches 9 of under-cut slots 10V formed in the hinge leaf 2 and at 1l these studs are upset in an vattaching plate 12.
heads which are freely movable in the under-'cut slots 10 as sho-wn in Fig. 3. In orthe hinge leaves, being of a size uniform with the leaf 2, and said attaching plate 12 is se-` y K cured tothe sash'C, by the fastening screws D, while the leaf l, is secured in a like manner by screws E, to the frame F. The Yface plate 14 is secured to the hinge leaf 2, by means of screws Gr.
The attaching plate is provided with a boss 15having a bearing passage 16'and a Acircular recess 17. f A cylindrical extension 18 on a supporting handle 19, is free to ro-'f tate inthe bearing passage 16 and formed on said'extension is a polygonal end 20 which is secured to a lifting cam 21, the latter having an eccentrically mounted cylindrical boss 22 which is free to oscillate in the recess 17. The said cam is mounted in a substantially U shapedcam slot 23 formed in the hinge leaf 2 and it thus-'follows that on moving the handle 19, movement will beV instantly imparted to fthe Vsash or easement, C.
On referring toFig. 6, of the drawings, it. will be observed that when the 'hinge is closed, all of the leaves thereof, the attach- At v13 the studs arefprovided with enlarged v ing plate 12 and the face plate 14, lie paralcome against the leaf 1 and'in this manner, the studs 7 Vare effectually held from impinglel withone another. The face plate 14 will ing against the leaf 1, and friction between the parts isthereby avoided so as to insure freedom'of movement of the sash.
The device shown in this 'application isa companion4 to the structure shown and deyscribed in Viny co-pendingapplication No. (34059 filed December Il, 19175, the material or essential*difference thcreover being in the manner 0f sliding the attaching plate di? rectly from the hinge, while in the mentioned application the hingeitself is free to slide fromthe attaching plate.
