Description

E. HAWKINS. AMUSEMENT DEVICE. APPLICATION HLED'SEPT. 19. 1am
Patented Jan. 29,1918.-
law/fins wvww 2 I! 0 n J 23ml--- J 8 ELWOOD HAWKINS, OF CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed September 19, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Emvoon HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cape May, in the county of Cape May and State of New Jersey, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a novel dancing toy having figures arranged thereon and so connected with wind actuated means as to pen init a vibratory motion to be imparted thereto, thus, causing said figures to appear as though they are dancing or jigging.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy of the character mentioned which can be easily attached to the radiators or other portions of automobiles or may be carried in the hand of a person, if desired.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of the improved toy;
Fig. 2 is a vertical fragmentary section therethrough; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the same.
Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, the toy includes a circular base 1 having a hollow vertical rod 2 arranged concentrically thereof, the said rod being slotted as at 3 in proximity of the lower portion thereof for a purpose to be subsequently apparent. The lower extremity of the hollow rod 2 is so formed as to afford a socket for a handle member 1 which is adapted to be inserted thereinto when the toy is carried in the'hand of a person.
Upon the under side of the. circular base 1 a plurality of brackets 5 are arranged and are adapted to slidably receive a plurality of substantially U-shaped supporting arms 6 therein. WVhen using the supporting arms Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 29, 1918.
Serial No. 192,109.
G, the handle 4 is of course removed and the fievicc is permitted to stand upon a suitable ase.
A bracket 7 having vertical and horizon tally disposed sleeves 8 and 9 formed upon the extremities thereof is engaged with the upper end of the hollow rod 2, the sleeve 8 fitting thereover.
Mounted upon the outer extremity of a crank shaft 10 arranged in the sleeve 9 is a rotatable fan 11, which, obviously is adapted to be rotated by engagement with wind. To the inner end of the crank shaft 10 a link 12 is pivotally engaged and has its opposite end loosely engaged with a pitman 13 arranged in and extending vertically of the hollow rod 2 to a point adjacent the slots 3 formed therein. At this point, a plate 14 having seats formed in its opposite sides is secured to the said pitman by means of suitable devices 15 and has arranged in the said seats thereof a sleeve 16 carrying a cross arm 17, the opposite ends of which are bent downwardly at substantially right angles as at 18.
To the downwardly bent ends 18 of the cross arm 17 figures 19 representing persons and having the arms and legs thereof pivotally secured to the body portion, are secured, the lower extremities .of the said fig ures being arranged adjacent the circular base 1 and adapted to engage the same at times.
Bells or other suitable devices 20 are secured in spaced relation to the cross arm 17 and upon movement thereof will jingle.
In operation, the fan 11 is so placed as to be engaged by wind and upon rotation thereof, will impart reciprocatory motion to the pitrnan 18, which will in turn impart vibratory movement to the figures 19 carried upon the opposite ends of the cross arm 17. Such vibratory movementof the figures 19 will cause the same to appear as though they are dancing or,jigging.
The circular base 1, may if desired, be provided with suitable clamps or other forms of brackets whereby the same may be attached to the filling caps of the radiator of an automobile. However, in this connection, it is to be understood that the device may be arranged upon other portions of an automobile, or other vehicle.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a toy, a base, a hollow vertical rod on said base, a fan rotatably mounted on the upper end of the rod, figures movably coir nected to the rod and arranged adjacent said base, and means connecting the fan to said figures for imparting vibratory motion thereto upon rotation of the former.
in a toy, a base, a hollow vertical rod on. said base, a fan rotatablymounted on the upper end of said rod, figures movably engaged with the rod and arranged adjacent said base, and a pitman extending through the hollow rod and connected to the fan and the figures for imparting vibratory motion thereto at times.
3. In a toy, a base, a hollow vertical rod on said base having diametrically disposed slots formed in the lower portion thereof, a fan rotatably mounted on the upper end of said rod, a pitman extending through the rod and connected to said fan, a cross-arn1 movably engaged with the lower end of the pitman through said slots, and figures carried upon the opposite ends of the cross arm and arranged adjacent said base.
4-. In a toy, a circular base, a hollow vertical rod on said base having the lower portion thereof provided with diametrically disposed slots, a bracket arranged upon the upper end of the rod, a fan journaled in bearings on said bracket, a pitman extending through the rod and having one end thereof connected to the fan, a plate arranged upon the lower end of the pitman having the sides thereof extending through said slots, a cross arm secured to the plate, figures carried upon the opposite ends of said cross arm and arranged adjacent the circular base, and bracket means arranged on the base and for the'purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
ELlVOOD HAWKINS.
