Be it known that l, JOHN li'. RUTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vv'indows, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in windows, and more particularly relates to that class of windows in which the sash is constructed wholly of metal and the glass therein is provided with a metal reinforce.
The object of my invention is to construct a sash in which there is placed clamping devices arranged to be secured to the margins of the glass in such manner that the glass may have a limited degree of freedom to move relative to the sash, yet be held so that its margins may not be withdrawn from the grooves in the sash.
si further and more specific object of my invention is to construct an improved forni of clamp whose shape and construction permit it to be secured to glass and to adhere 'thereto by pressure without producing torsional or lateral strains upon the glass which would tend Lo break or shatter the glass.
1With the above purposes in view my invention consists in certain novel features of the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of a sash constructed according to my invention, a poi'- tion thereof being shown in section;

rIhe fourth member has a cross section whose appearance is substantially the same as the cross section of either of the other three members and contains a slot l1 instead of a groove such as 9 and a removable wall 12, which permits of the insertion of the glass through the slot 11 to a position seated in the grooves of the three remaining sash members.
This much of. my sash forms no part of my invention and any well known construction of sheet metal sash may be employed, the only essential to the sash being grooves for holding the glass in place, and hollow bodies surrounding the groove in order to provide for the reception of my improved clamping devices.
My improved clamping device in itself comprises a pair of relatively movable jaws 13 and 14, integral angular extensions 15 and 16 and a set screw 17 carried by one extension and arranged to bear on the other eX- tension for the movement of the jaws.
Each jaw and its extension is preferably constructed from a single piece of material,
the onejaw having formed in opposing side margins the depressions 18, and the other" jaw being provided with spaced apart tines 19 which are arranged to embrace the material of the opposite jaw between the depressions 18 and are then bent to hold the two jaws together.
Adjacent the free end of each of the jaws there is a Hat face Q0 which serves the double function of providing a comparatively broad face for adhesion to the glass and also holds the two jaws in a xed relation with the glass.
From these relatively broad faces the bodies of the jaws incline in directions away from the glass so that, in case the body of the glass is bent out of shape, the margins thereof will be free to yield.
Formed in one of the jaws of each clamp there is a slot or opening 21 and struck from the wall of the glass receiving groove there is a lip 22 the end of which is arranged to be inserted through the slot or opening in the jaw and upset to provide a means where by the clamp may be secured to the sash.
Formed in the sash adjacent each of the clamps there is an opening 23 which prow vides for the insertion of the clamp into, the sash and the insertion of atool for. the turning of the set screws carried by the clamps.
By this arrangement a sash may be furnished fully equipped With' glass securing clampsv which permit ofV the glazing of the.
sash Without the employment of tools other than one to drawup the set screws.
When a Window sash is equipped With my improved clamps secured to the margin of a sheet of glass having a metallic reinforce the dangers and annoyancesY incident' to broken and falling glassare almost entirely obviated.
A further and'more important' advantagearising from the use of my'improvedclamps on reinforced glass is that, in case of fire;
a plurality of securing means engageable` with the Walls of said grooves iii the sash and arranged tof embrace said Walls of the groove and a device at each securing means for creating added pressure tothe Walls of saidvgrooves whereby' to' createv such clamp'- ing pressures at themarginsfof the sheet ofv glass which. Will secure thewire mesh to the Walls of the groovesin the sash sothat' in the event the body of. the' sheet of glass is brokenLthe glass will be prevented from fall ingby reasoiiof the Wiremesh being secured in the sash.
2.1 In combination with a sheet of glass having a reinforce' embedded therein andf ax sash arranged to surround the margins ofthe sheet of glass, a glass securing meansl and a` device at the securing means whereby to create sucliclamping pressure to at least one margin of the sheet of glass which Will secure the reinforce to the sash so that the sheet of glass will be prevented from loosening or. falling by reason of the reinforce loe-n ing secured to the sash.
3. Inl combination With a hollovv'metallic sash having spaced Walls, a sheet of remforced glass having its margins arranged within said Walls, portions of said Walls being removed and variable pressure clampingV devices directly engageable with the sheetA of glass at the points of removal of portions of said Walls and surrounding at least portions of said Walls whereby the means for securing the glass to the sash will permit of certain glass leXur-e to the sash.
Without danger of breakage and whereby the margins of the sheet of glass may be clamped With such pressure V.as to secure the reinforce against removal from the sash in order to prevent falling glassin the event the sheet is broken. Y
