To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l. (inonon E. Peron, a citizen of the .United yStates, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ol Los Angeles and State of California`r have invented a new and useful Expanding Device for Spectacle-Rims, of which the Yfollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a device used for the purpose of expanding spectacle rims of the class generally known as composition rims, that is, rims made of celluloid composition, and similar materials. It frequently happens that the lens is a little large for the standard sizes of rims. which necessitates a cutting down of the lens, or an expansion ot' the rim.
The principal object ot my invention is to provide a simple 'form oit expanding device by means of which composition rims may be expanded to lit the lenses upon which they are to be used.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying a form of my invention.

11 designates an outer member consisting of a sheet metal mandrel in the form of a truncated cone, the upper end of which is closed by means of an end wall 12 formed as a part thereof. 13 designates a cylindrical inner member` preferably made of sheet metal, open at the top and having its lower end flanged outwardly, as indicated at 14. The outer edge ot' the flanged portion 14 fits within the lower end ot the mandrel 11, as clearly shown in Fig. Fitting within the lower end of the inner member 13 is a hollow stem 15 which is secured therein in any suitable manner, as by brazing. The lower end 16 of the stem 15 is threaded into a handle 17 of any suitable material, the handle 17 having an opening 18 extending therethrough in open communication with the hollow stem 15.

inner member 13 against the mandrel 11. 22 designates a screw which extends through the upper end of the mandrel into the block 20, thereby securing the mandrel against the end of the inner member 13 and holding the same firmly in place. The block 2O is provided with a groove 23 on each side thereof connecting with a passage 24 extending diagonally through the block to the bottom thereof. rllhe inner member 13 constitutes a support for the heating element, which consists of a coil of exposed wire 25 wound upon insulating material, such as isingiass 27, which is placed around the inner member 13 and supported thereon. '.Ihe ends oit the wire 25 are passed into the grooves 223 in the sides of the block 20. thence downwardly through the passages 24 therein, being brought together under the block 2O and twisted together, in which form they extend downwardly through the member 13, the stem 15, and the opening 18 in the handle 17, to any suitable source of electric current, the twisted portion of the wire being covered with insulation of any common form, as indicated at 2S. The heating coil is spaced apart from the mandrel, the mandrel being retained in such position by the ends of the block 20 and the flange 14 of the inner member.
The device is used in the following manner:
Electric current is supplied to the wire 25 from any exterior source, not shown, thereby heating the coil on the inner member 13, which imparts heat to the mandrel 11. The spectacle rim 30 to be heated is slipped on the mandrel, and as the same becomes heated, and expands, it may be moved downwardly upon the mandrel until the rim has been expanded to the desired size, standard sizes being indicated, if desired, upon the exterior oi the mandrel, as indicated by the scale 31 shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. When the rim has been enlarged to the size desired, it may be removed from the mandrel and the lens inserted in the rim, the rim cooling and forming a tight it on the lens.
While in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 I have shown a mandrel of circular form, it is understood that the mandrel and the heating element may be elliptical in form, as shown at 33 and 84 respectively in Fig. 4, and further that instead of having a handle, as shown in Figs, 1 and 2, for supporting the device, the
same may be placed upon a stand, as indicated at in Fig. 5.
While I have re't'erred to and called my invention an expanding device tor spectacle rims, it is understood that l do not limitmy invention to articles classiiied as spectacle rims, but that the same may be used for an)v 'torm of eye-glass rims as well as other circular or elliptical shaped articles.
lVhat I claim is:-
l. An expanding device comprisii'ig a tapered mandrel, an inner member Within said mandrel, means for securing said mandrel to said inne-r member, a heating element on said inner member, and handle means secured to said inner member 'li'or supporting said device.
2. )in expanding device conlprising a 'truste-conical mandrel, a cylindrical member wit-hin said mandrel, an electric heating element on said Cylindrical member, means l'or insulatin, said heating element from said cylindrical member, means for securing said mandrel to the cylindrical member. and means for support-ing said cylindrical membei'.

An expanding device comprising` a tapered mandrel, a cylindrical member within said mandrel, a block of insulating material supported in said cylindrical member having passages therethrough, means engaging said block :tor securing said mandrel to said cy* lgindrical member, insulatingmaterial on said c vlindrieal member, a coil on said last named insulating material, the ends ot said coil extending through the passages in said block, and means Ytor supporting said cylindrical member.
